Family and Friends Comes First:
My grandmother was the type of person who put her family and friends first. She would try her best to make sure her family was always taken care of, or lend a helping hand to a friend in need. If they needed extra cash[->0] to pay a bill or just needed something to eat she would open her house, purse, and her heart for them. I know it sounds like she never did anything for herself to make her happy but I think she felt by helping others made her feel happy. My grandmother worked at the same job for over 50 years and she never complained about it. She enjoyed the people she worked with and the company she worked for. She worked for one of the DuPont companies in downtown Wilmington, Delaware working as a cleaning lady. Then she would come home and take care of her family and friends. When I was young I ask my grandmother how can she do all these things and still have time to enjoy herself. She turned to me and told me she had super powers, and from that point on we all called her super granny. My grandmother played the numbers once or twice a week and if she won anything she would treat all her grandkids with something.
In 2007 I found out that my grandmother had Alzheimer’s and I didn’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe that my super granny couldn’t remember things. I knew she would always remember me; I was the main one that came to see her when I was home. The last time I seen my grandmother was in December 2007 right before I PCS to Korea. I had to tell her my name six-seven times and it hurt every time. She lived everyday to the fullest walks, walks that she had been doing for years, sometimes she couldn’t remember where she was and we would have to go find her. Before I left I ask my cousins and my mother to keep an eye on my

Alzheimer’s is a horrible experience for everyone: the diagnosed person and the family members now turned caregivers. For the latter of these some have described it as worse than being the one who has the incurable disease. This is because the person with Alzheimer’s forgets and does not know what they are doing, that they are changing, whereas the family experiences the slow excruciating pain of seeing a loved one go through this disease and knowing that there is nothing you can do to restore what they once were. While watching The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s I witnessed many families and their experiences with Alzheimer's. The most heart wrenching scenes were where the family caregivers said things like ‘I hate him sometimes……

My mom always told me that I would be a doctor or nurse or choose a career along the lines of caring after others. I did not want to further my future taking physical care of others; instead, I sought out ways to heal the brain and deal with emotions people have. Growing up, I witnessed many mental illnesses and I wondered why they existed. My grandmother suffered from dementia while living with my family. I took turns caring for her while my parents worked. That consisted of changing her clothes and getting her to take baths, and persuading her to eat food. She often forgot my name and most times called me very rude things,…

My grandmother have always lived pretty close to where I live. All my life, my grandmother has been the nicest person. Even though she was the nicest person she could also be the meanest at times. Grandmas, the ones that cook for you and give you candy are the ones that love you for who you are and let you get away with things they wouldn't let their own kids get away with. Some grandmas can't even walk when they get up in age, but then there are some like mine who at the age of 83 are doing things other 83 years olds don't and shouldn't be doing. Most people would expect an 83 year old grandma to be knitting, light cooking, playing bingo and slowly walking her way to church. Not my grandmother, you can find her climbing on ladders, fixing fans, constantly moving, driving big pick-up trucks, all while looking like she is going to the social club.…

She was the only one that could bail me out of time out when i got in trouble, the only one that would play dress up with me because I was the only girl growing up, and the only one that allowed me to watch TV until my eyes fell out. I loved staying up late listening to her spooky ghost stories and dreaded waking up early for Sunday morning bible study with her. Grandma Bea was the big sister I always wanted, and regretfully, I am just now realizing it. She had been a registered nurse for years, and worked as a supervisor in a nursing home. Recently, my family began to notice her regular calls were fading from the cheery talk about how great work was, to her worrying someone was stealing from her. Some of her belongings began to disappear. When her mother's jewelry came up missing, my dad went over to make sure she didn't just misplace it. After searching for hours, he plopped down on the couch for a breather when, low and behold, the missing jewels were found in between the couch cushions. As my family's concern for her well-being began to grow, she reasoned this was only what comes of old age along with her lousy eyesight and somewhat hard of hearing. She was not able to drive at night. If she happened to be behind the wheel at night fall, she would pull over to switch seats with someone. Grandma is such a stubborn woman. She argued with the family until they were convinced that she could stay at her own apartment. After all, she lived in a senior living community located directly across the street from her job. She was still a certified registered nurse and was still my father's mother, so he let her be and dismissed it as she disputed. Not too long after that episode, my dad received an urgent message from her exclaiming that there were aliens in her apartment, and she needed to get picked up immediately. As bogus as that sounded, my dad rushed over as soon as he could. He…

This is something that I was able to witness myself as well as hear it from all of my other family members. Even if the day had turned for the worst, this woman would always try to find some small positive thing. This quality was something who really defined my aunt’s character. I personally remember one day when we had plans to go to the river and go out fishing and right as soon as we were about to get in the car a huge Florida storm came rolling in depleting our chanced of doing much of anything all day. Yet, aunt Norma Dell pulled out some old games and puzzles and we enjoyed our rainy day almost as much as we would have if we went fishing. This trait might seem simple to some people, but her ability to point out the good in every possible situation is a gift that I have great admiration…

I have always admired the senior citizens who are wondering how they have passed such long journeys of their lives. They not only have accomplished achievements, but also have done memorable works that deserve admiration, respect, and priority in today’s society. These old people may look incompetent and unexciting in somebody’s eyes and thoughts, but not everyone realizes that they are the people with greatest knowledge and experiences beyond their masters of life. From my own experience, whenever I see an old mister or mistress looking for help or in need of help, I can never ignore him or her and instead offer to help as much as I can. Originated from my respect upon them, I decided to interview an elderly gentleman about the observations and opinions on his experiences with ageism and ageist stereotypes. I interviewed this one particular person who wanted himself to be acknowledged as John Evans. We were so glad that he was more than willing to help us get through this assignment and really appreciate him for sparing his free time telling us his life story.…
