Faith In Humanity In Elie Wiesel's Night
Millions upon millions of Jews died during World War II in an era called the Holocaust; Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night, is just one story from one man’s perspective of the horrifying event. Wiesel sets the dark and depressing tone with great word choices of the heartbreaking sights he has been forced to see and encounter. This holocaust survivor has been through so much and he is trying to set in stone what Hitler and the Nazis did before it is wiped away like most of the history people do not like to face. Night is a great memoir which tests the readers on if they still will have a faith in humanity after they pass through the last page. Elie Wiesel’s faith in humanity is tested over and over again during his whole ten years of being in the concentration camps; Wiesel’s whole point of the memoir is to never give up and never to give in, but in the end that is exactly what he ends up doing. During the main part of Wiesel’s memoir he begs and begs for everyone to always keep moving along, but in the end he is completely drained and numb from all that he has conquered. A great addition to this book translated by his wife, Marion Wiesel, is the new preface by Elie Wiesel himself. In the novel it states, “One more hour. Then we would know the verdict: death or reprieve” (Wiesel 70). Throughout the whole reading experience, he keeps the reader on edge wondering what is around each and every obstacle that he has been faced with.
