Successful and Failed Business Attempts
In today’s world of business there are many competitive challenges that are faced while attempting to stay relevant and successful in the business industry. Throughout this paper two companies will be discussed. The first for failing to stay relevant is Circuit City, whose attempt at remaining successful as a retail business was short lived. The second company to be discussed is Johnson & Johnson, who remained successful throughout the many years they have been in business. This theory “the conditions under which cognitive resources such as intelligence and experience are related to group performance” (Gary Yukl, 2013). The constant rotating doors of top management contributed to the inconsistencies in performance and the inability to compete with the evolving market of wholesale and discount stores. According to this theory, “interpersonal stress for the leader moderates the relation between leader intelligence and subordinate performance. When there is high interpersonal stress, strong emotions are likely to disrupt cognitive information processing and make intelligence difficult to apply” (Gary Yukl, 2013). Instead of focusing on internal structure it would be recommendable that the transformation and focus remain on external facets like consumer’s dependency and re-evaluating store performances to close down under performing locations. Personnel should be thoroughly informed of changes to the pay rate system to gain acceptance. “Organizations are made up of individuals and groups with different values, goals, and interests. This sets up the potential for conflict over the allocation of limited resources, such as departmental budgets, space, project responsibilities, and salary adjustment”(Stephen P. Robbins, 2013).
John Kotter’s 8 Step Plan in Action
The 8-step process created by John Kotter will help our organization make needed changes and focus on the vision and mission. By following the 8-step plan, our organization can formulate a plan, follow specific guidelines in doing so, develop changes that will benefit the organization and continue to strive for success that will be for the long term. The 8-step process works as follows:
1-Establish a sense of urgency
2-Creating the guiding

    Some of the steps we used in MCPP are also included in what we learned from our text in relation to Lewin’s Three-Step model and Kotter’s Eight-Step Plan for Implementing Change. The Commander change the status qou of the command and informed us to break away from being stuck in doing business as normal, the Commander ensured that we kept moving forward and not becoming stuck on a problem too long, and once we realized the way forward it became the new normal way of doing business which is in line with the Lewin’s Three Step model of unfreezing, movement and refreezing (Robbins & Judge, 2007, p. 625-626).
