Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction: In this era of globalization and technological revolution, education is considered as a first step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in development of human capital and it is linked with an individual’s well-being and opportunities for better living. It ensures the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enables individual to increase their productivity and improve their quality of life. This increase of productivity also leads towards new source of earning which enhances the economic growth of a country. Students are the precious resource of the economy of a society; therefore, teachers and staff of the worldwide universities believe that if a student has the weakness of learning such things, then, it would be the barrier in order for them to succeed.

Determinants of student’s performance have been the subject of ongoing debate among Filipino Educators and Policy Makers. In our national government, there many cases of dropouts in a certain school with regarding to the low

    Most students getting into MBBS program have a good academic track record upon entry into the medical school. In Malaysian medical school it is observed that each year about 10-15% of students have difficulty in completing their medical course on time and this is a concerned to medical educators and administrators. It is important to know the reasons why there is a marked change in their academic once they come to professional courses especially medicine. Clearly, there are numerous cognitive and non-cognitive factors that have a much stronger influence on medical students’ academic performance.
