We can’t believe that it needs to be said, but you probably shouldn’t get an eyeball tattoo. You think that we’re kidding around, but a woman got one recently, and ran into some serious problems. We could have told her that would happen.
What is an eyeball tattoo?
An eyeball tattoo is officially called sclera staining or tattooing. It’s when you inject ink into the whites of your eyes to change the color. It’s risky, and if not done properly can lead to some very serious permanent problems. People who do get this kind of tattoo done experience at the bare minimum some serious eye swelling.

For the first couple of weeks after the tattoo her eye was so swollen that she wasn’t even able to open it. She has been to the hospital multiple times for different drops and medications to help with the swelling not just externally, but internally as well. The internal part of her eye became infected, and as of right now she has lost partial sight in her eye. It’s uncertain whether she’ll ever gain it back again.

Despite the danger, sclera tattooing is on the rise. Where doctors were hearing about it once a decade, now they’re hearing about it monthly.
