A young boy choosing to deceive others may seem childish but the young boy in the novel, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, is an exception. The young boy, Oskar Schell chooses to lie in order to protect his mother from knowing that he was putting himself in danger and wants to keep her at ease in this fragile state that they are both in. Oskar also lies to himself, even though that may not be by choice, he does. He does this because his young mind and heart does not know how to cope with the loss of his father. His deception allows him to distract himself from the problems he is facing and in the end they all have consequences that actually turned out positively.
