Question 1

The data set HPRICE.XLS contains data on house prices (in dollars), house characteristics and location desirability.

Let Y= house price be the dependent variable and consider the following potential explanatory variables:

(a) Using the data the calculate, interpret and discuss the mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, skewness, kurtosis and of Y, , , , and .
(20 marks)
(b) Estimate correlation coefficients between variables in (a) and comment on your results.
(15 marks)
(c) Regress Y and all the explanatory variables and discuss your results.
(25 marks)
(d) Regress Y on various subsets of and discuss your results.
Comparing your results for (c) and (d), examine the effect of omitting explanatory variables.
(40 marks)

Question 2

The US Golf team has collected some data to try to estimate the distance travelled by a golf ball when it is hit by a player.

Other variables that they have collected which they believe offer some insight on the distance travelled by a golf ball when it is hit (Distance is measured in feet) (DIST) include:

Hang time (time in the air, in seconds) (HANG)
Right hand strength (measured in pounds of force) (RHSTH)
Left hand strength (in pounds of force) (LHSTH)
Right hand flexibility (in degrees) (RHFLX)
Left hand flexibility (in degrees) (LHFLX)
Overall strength (in pounds) (OLSTH)

The data collected on a sample of 13 shots (by right-handed players) is shown below.

The housing market changes quite frequently and depending on the city, state, and neighborhood. When a home-buyer is interested in purchasing a home they look for what fits their needs, life style, and budget. This is important because it will also determine what type of house they can afford to live in and how much they can get for the amount their budget will allow. Buyers and sellers will look for certain variables when purchasing or selling a home and data must be gathered to make sure that all details match and that all requirements are met. It would be safe to assume that our theory that the larger the house and the more rooms a house has, the more expensive the price of the house will be. The three major variables in our data summary are: number of bedrooms, size of the house, and number of baths.…

For this project we measured the COR of a Titlelist 4 golf ball. We dropped the ball from a height of 1.24m five times to get a consistent height of the bounce. The results of the bounces were all around .914m high. Here is a sample problem for the coefficient of restitution of a Titlelist 4 golf ball:…

The goal behind this experiment was to estimate the distance a ball would travel after it falls a certain distance and bounces off a metal plate which has an angle of 45 degrees. To find this we had to take the basic equations for kinematics which are (1/2)at2=x and v=v0+at and combine them to make an equation that will help us solve for the distance the ball will travel after hitting the bounce plate. The equation came out to be R=g*(sqrt(2)/sqrt(g))*(sqrt(H)*sqrt(h)), as that g is acceleration of gravity, h is the height of bounce plate, and H is the height of where the ball will be dropped. After completing this experiment the result was that the standard deviation was +/- 2.3 cmfrom the average value of 26.5cm. This was used for each variable H was 20cm and h was 20cm. Also there 18 trials performed as well.…

From the descriptive statistics we can see that the mean driving distances of two kinds of balls are close. The distances of current balls (270.3) are a little bigger than that of new balls (267.5). With the same maximum, the minimum distance of current balls are 5 yards larger than that of new balls. And the variance of the new balls (97.9) is bigger than that of current balls (76.6), which means that new balls have greater variability of driving distances.…
