An infantile reflex is a stereotypical movement that is an involuntary reaction to a specific stimulus. While some reflexes such as eye blinking will remain throughout one’s life span, others are only present during infancy. There are three types of movements that can be categorized as primitive reflexes, postural reactions, and locomotor reflexes.
New-borns have strong primitive reflexes that gradually disappear around 4 months of age. These are in response to a specific stimulus such as when a baby is in the supine position and the head is turned to one side and the response is the arm and leg of the same side becomes extended.
Postural reactions help infants from the age of 2 months to automatically maintain posture in a changing environment.
