Exploring Psychotic Characters in Let
Exploring Psychotic Characters in Literature

The following characters are villains, or antagonists in their stories. An antagonist is the character who strives against another main character. This character opposes the hero or protagonist in drama. The term is also used to describe one who contends with or opposes another in a fight, conflict, or battle of wills. In literature, this is the principal opponent or foil of the main character and is considered the villain unless the protagonist is a villain; in that case, the antagonist is the hero. (Guide to Literary Terms: Antagonist) The Misfit in A Good Man is Hard to Find, is a criminal and murderer. He seems to do bad things for the sake of doing it without remorse. He doesn’t understand why he has been punished the way he has for what he did. “I call myself the misfit,” he said, “because I can’t make what all I done wrong fit what all I gone through in punishment.” (O’Connor 211) This leads me to believe that maybe he doesn’t see anything wrong in what he does and that killing people isn’t a bad thing to him. The Misfit seems to believe Jesus exists but cannot decide whether or not he did what the bible says. “If He did what He said, then it’s nothing for you to do but throw away everything and follow Him, and if He didn’t, then it’s nothing for you to do but enjoy the few minutes you got left the best way you can- by killing somebody or burning down his house or doing some other meanness to him. No pleasure but meanness.” (O’Connor

211) If the Misfit could have seen with his own eyes the work of Jesus he would believe but because he can’t see it, it isn’t real. Manly Pointer in Good Country People is a traveling bible salesman and con artist. He is not searching for anything but a good time and he is a firm believer in nothing. Manly does not care for Jesus nor is he looking to justify what he does. He sells bibles but doesn’t believe in what he sells. He is a liar and a fraud with a weak heart.

The Misfit keeps the grandmother as his two accomplices’ handle the rest of the family. He explained to the grandmother “’it would’ve been better if you hadn’t reckernized me’” (492). Almost every story has an antagonist. The Scarlet Letter and Moby Dick are no exception. The characters that allow evil to manifest itself in these stories are Captain Ahab and Roger Chillingworth. There are many differences in Mr. Ahab and Mr. Chillingworth and how they become evil.…

An antagonist is defined as a person who is opposed to, or the "bad guy." In Cool Hand Luke and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest the Captain and Nurse Ratchet played this role, respectively. They both appeared to be what I would call and "control freak." Although Nurse Ratchet and the Captain are similar characters, I feel that their need and reason for control, as well as their methods, differ.…

Flannery O’Connor's two different short stories “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Greenleaf,” are dramatically different stories, but as you read the two it doesn't take long to put them, possibly, in the same category when referring to the characters in the stories, my claim is that both Mrs. May and the Misfit both suffered from psychological problems that affected their beliefs in whole.…

Why is he called the misfit? His reasoning for calling himself the misfit is based on his encounter with the justice system. Supposedly, there were papers for his arrest-that he never saw-and then was told by the head doctor he killed his father. However, he claimed he had no recollection of such actions. He believes that actions are considered wrong only because other people say that they are wrong, and he must have done something bad because they have papers. He stated that he could not fit what he had done wrong, with the punishment he received in jail. At one point, he even refered his situation similar to Jesus, except that he, the Misfit, did commit some sort crime and once again just does not remember. His actions after his escape…

The Misfit as an external force is the one that helps the Grandma realize how much of a conceited life she has lived. She uses the name of “Jesus” so often that the word itself seems “…as if she might be cursing,” which shows how she has tricked herself into believing she is a devout Christian (O’Connor 308). Minutes before her passing, her soul is redeemed from the fantasy she lived in, to the hard truth about her religion when the Misfit involves Jesus by saying “Maybe he didn’t raise the dead”…

“Well, you need the villain. If you don’t have a villain, the good guy can stay home.” Christoph Waltz.Villains are like school, you don’t really like it but you would be nowhere without it. A villain is a character that is evil and creates problems in the story. Queen Levana from Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles, and the Sirens from Homer’s The Odyssey. Queen Levana is the queen of Luna and lets know one dampen her reign, she will do anything to get what she wants. The sirens are mythical creatures that attract men to their island with their voices and then as soon as they are on the island they are killed. Although the Sirens are villains, and good ones, it is clear that Levana is better at being the bad guy.…

In "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" is The Misfit is uneducated and was raised in the backwoods. He got into a lot of mischief when he was young as indicated by his father's comments. On page 439 paragraph 100 his father said he was a "different breed of dog from the others". You get the idea The Misfit is mentally unstable when he said in paragraph 111, ". . . along the way I did something wrong and they sent me to the penitentiary. I was buried alive." He seemingly ignores Grandma's question as to why he was sent to prison and continues to describe the way he felt in his cell. He then answers Grandma's question and says the psychologist told him he killed his father. He denied that fact because he said is father died of the flu epidemic in "nineteen ought nineteen". Another indicator of his mental instability in the story is when he talks about Jesus raising the dead and "thown" everything off balance. He was also angry because he was not present when the dead were…

In his unpublished paper Jack and the Monster Factory, Simon Roltson, compares Misfit with the serial killer Carl Panzram, because both claims that their acts of violence were performance of revenge on a society whose rules and courts had brutalized them. Which rendered them violently antisocial. Panzram also claims that the penitentiary has a similar antisocial effect on all the other prisoners (Roltson 2). The Misfit also seems to argue that Jesus should be cursed, because Jesus put the humanity in dilemma by raising the dead. His act of raising the dead “thrown everything off balance.” He compares himself to Jesus because they both were punished. At least Jesus knew what he was being punished for, but Misfit had no idea. So, he thinks he was not treated right. But he finds the rational solution to this that is why he always sign for everything he does and get a copy of it. So, he says “you’ll know what you done and hold up the crime to punishment and see do they match and in the end, you’ll have something to prove you ain’t been treated right” (O’Conner 10). This is his way of “doing right by himself.” Misfit wants to transfer his own felt degradation to grandmother as a means of freedom, that is why he said “no pleasure but meanness.” He also wants to decrease his pain by killing or by mean to others but all this increases it as he mentioned “it’s no real pleasure in life.” So, his act of reducing or get rid of his pain by…

The Misfit is a more modern man who spends his time murdering the innocent, also known as a serial killer. The Misfit is a complicated man with what can be debated as the character with the least amount of character development, yet the most at the same time. He himself does not know if he has done what he has been told he has done. He said himself, “It was a head doctor who said what i had done was kill my daddy but I know that was a lie. My daddy died in nineteen ought nineteen of the epidemic flu and I never had a thing to do with it.” The Misfit spoke well of his father, and said himself that he called himself the misfit because he could never make what he had done wrong fit in what he had been through himself through punishment. The Misfit does not have religious beliefs, as many Jews in the Holocaust lost their faith in god, he did as well after the trauma of his father dying, and the Misfit paying the consequences for it. The Misfit is a new type of evil and makes the story unique with the rare epiphany for the villain in a story. He seemed like the stereotypical evil in the beginning of the story, but later changes to be a slightly chaotic neutral as he says, “"Some fun!" Bobby Lee said. "Shut up, Bobby Lee" The Misfit said. "It's no real pleasure in…

The Misfit. The Misfit, The Misfit, The Misfit. So many questions are raised about character called “The Misfit”. Was he born to be a killer? Was he a victim of childhood curiosity? Was he simply a good man turned bad over time? Or was his whole attitude a struggle of his true belief system? The Misfit stays on his own moral code regardless of the evil that he has committed. His morals are his own right, not by traditional standards, but by his steadfast and consistent actions. He’s an unlikely source, seeming to have not a moral fiber in his being, but demonstrates deep convictions that others in the story are not able to reveal. As deviant and depraved as The Misfit might have been, he still relied on his moral code to guide his actions. There are several parts of this story that show where The Misfit doesn’t actually take pleasure in his crimes. Was he simply a good man turned bad over time? When he first meets the family, The Misfit mentions that children make him nervous. If he is a strong, armed man and they pose no threat to him why is he so nervous? It seems to be that in his mind the children represent his own innocents, and in turn they could pose a threat to his conscience. The children make him nervous because he knows he will be taking their lives so possibly he feels like he is killing his own inner child, his innocents.…

Although the misfit might not be a follower of Christ, he certainly has put more thought into Christ than the grandmother. This is most apparent when the misfit questions whether Jesus raised the dead and the grandmother responds by saying, “Maybe He didn’t raise the dead” (O’Connor 466). Any follower of Christ would know for a fact that Jesus definitely rose the dead, yet the grandmother is unsure. It is ironic that a murderer would have thought more in depth about religion than a follower of religion.…
