Persuasive Essay
Since North America has been discovered many expeditors have explored in the United States, including Cabeza de Veca, Don Garcia Lopez de Cardenas and William Bradford. In this essay I will try to persuade you that William Bradford was the best navigator out of all of them by comparing their expeditions, qualities and strengths and weaknesses. Don Garcia Lopez de Cardenas was an okay commander. He was smart and a good communicator, “They (Native Americans) provided him guides to proceed on his journey” (de Cardenas 53), the Native Americans did not even no Spanish so this proves he was good at communicating. De Cardenas also was a good navigator, “The descent was almost impossible, but, after these three days, at a place which seemed less difficult” (de Cardenas 53). Just like every navigator he did have some flaws, he and his troops marched for twenty days then spent another three days looking for a way down the river when it only took the Native American three or four day to finish the whole trip. When he and his troops finally reached the bottom they had to turn back because no water was found. The Native Americans take water on their trip and bury some of it for the trip back, all they had to do was ask them. Cabeza de Veca by far, in my opinion, was the worst commander. He started out with 400 people but when it was all said and done only four remained but one good thing he did do was heal a Native American by performing the first recorded surgery in Texas. Even though he might have suck at navigating he did have some good qualities. De Veca was a religious man, “We prayed to God our Lord, to assist us, and the sick began to get well” (de Veca 50), he spoke this when the Native Americans and his companions started becoming sick and dying. He was compassionate and a man of his word, “They (Native Americans) were afraid of losing crops, since for two successive years it had not rained, and the seasons were so dry that the moles had eaten the corn, so they did not dare to plant until it had rain hard”(de Veca 50). Because of this, “… they also begged us to ask Heaven for rain, which we promised to do” (de Veca 50). In my opinion William Bradford was the best commander out of them all. Unlike Cabeza de Veca, only one person died on the way to America from England. He was the governor of the Plymouth Colony for thirty years after the first governor died during his first year of office, this shows that he was in some way a good leader. Bradford was a great sea navigator, “They were encountered many times with crosswinds, and met with many fierce storms, which the ship was shrewdly shaken, and her upper works made very leaky; and one of the main beams in the mid ships was bowed and cracked” (Bradford 59), even through all of these hardships they never had to turn back and the ship did not sink. Once the Pilgrims landed in America many of the colonizers were afraid of Indian attacks but Governor William Bradford had a solution, “With whom after friendly entertainment and some gifts given him (Squanto), they made peace with him in these terms…” (Bradford 64). Through all their flaws and weaknesses Cabeza de Veca, Don Garcia Lopez de Cardenas and William Bradford were all great expeditors but I believe William Bradford had less flaws and weaknesses. At the end of the day William Bradford delivered the Pilgrims to America and if it was not for him we would not have the chance to live in the greatest country in the world.

Cabeza de Vaca was born in 1490 in the town of Extremadura, Spain (Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, 2014). He started a military career early in his teens (pg. 9). After several successful military endeavors, he became second in command as the treasurer on the Narváez expedition to Florida. Narváez expedition began on June 17, 1527, with five ships and 600 men (pg. 27). The expedition did not go as planned. There was severe weather that caused their ships to sink, men got sick and died, and others starved. Over the next 10 years, Cabeza de Vaca and others endured extreme hardships as they made their way across 6,000 miles through Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and northern Mexico (pg. 7). The…

America was first conquered by the conquistadors. What was not expected was the harshness and savageness of the native population of the Americas. One Spanish Explorer, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was such an explorer who documented his 8 years with a group of Native Americans known as the Karankawas. In his narrative, De Vaca, diminishes the stereotype of what Europeans believed the Native Americans were.…

In chapter 3 Jared Diamond discusses one of the most controversial battles that shifted the new world to what we know today, the Battle of Cajamarca. Diamond states in his book “The biggest population shift of modern times has been the colonization of the new World by Europeans, and the resulting conquest, numerical reduction, or complete disappearance of most groups of Native Americans.” This battle was between the Incas and the Spaniards. Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro led a Spanish army of 168 soldiers; he was going against an army of 80,000 soldiers led by Atahualpa. Pizarro was 1000 miles away from reinforcements, and knew nothing about the local inhabitants. The stakes were all against him. Yet Pizarro was able to win…

George Armstrong Custer, although a very successful military leader in the days of the Cival War, is probably best known for his biggest failure. “The battle, also known as ‘Custer’s Last Stand’, was part of the Black Hills War against a confederation of Plains Indians, including the Cheyenne and Dakota Sioux” (Foner http://www.history.com). This controversial battle is in line with the courageous, yet reckless, personality of Custer as a commander. Although his bold actions made him a distinguished cavalry commander, they were also his undoing (Foner http://www.history.com). Born in New Rumley, Ohio in 1839, George Custer was accepted into West Point Acadamy while he was only 17 years old.…

Throughout the course of history, Hernan Cortes was viewed as a hero and as one of the most important figures in the conquering of the Americas. He was also a Spanish conquistador, who led an expedition in 1518 that finally mastered the powerful Mexican empire. It was pretty basic stuff that everyone knew and that our elementary history teachers taught us. But now we wonder, especially me, in his adventure that brought him to America, did he do a good or bad job?…

    Geronimo Essay

Geronimo displayed the core values of the Apache tribe, that of courage, diligence, and aggressiveness. These core values were what kept them relatively safe from the increasing white settlement of the west, including Arizona and New Mexico (theinitialjourney.com.) Aggressiveness, or assertiveness, and diligence are key aspects of a leader. A leader must be assertive as well as persistent in order to maintain a certain level of self-confidence and influence over those who are being led, even in the face of adversity. Geronimo was a great example of an assertive leader. Geronimo led the last major Native American Fighting force to surrender to the United States; thus having the longest resistance period. Upon the discovery that his mother, wife, and his three young children had been murdered by Spanish troops, he vowed to avenge his family by retaliating against as many Mexican settlements as possible. It was not until this time that he received his ‘power’ of seeing visions (Indigenouspeople.net.) It was because Geronimo held out the fight for so long, that he became the most famous Apache of all. By asserting himself and applying himself in order to uphold his values of family and justice, Geronimo became an essential force as medicine man, acting in and out of combat as a spiritual and intellectual leader of the people (not a chief.) He escaped from a reservation three times, the final time bringing thirty five warriors and one hundred nine women and children…

But when his report is compared to the joint report there are many discrepancies. In De Vaca’s account, he is written as the hero in many situations that he probably was not. Such as how he wrote himself to be the lead healer while they were traveling healing Indians. Also, it is noted that the blame is placed on other people in situation where the outcome was bad. Such as the decision to separate from the ships in the beginning of the expedition. It is written that the decision was strictly that of the leader, Narvaez, and no one else’s. Another notable discrepancy in De Vaca’s account is that of the dates. In some places he speaks as if he was keeping an account of the dates they arrived and departed places but when he tells how many days the expedition was somewhere it does not add up to the dates he gives for arrival and departure. These discrepancies are notable and make De Vaca…
