During the 1930s, millions of dollars were wiped out in an event that became known as the Wall Street Crash. It led to the Depression in America which crippled the country from 1930 - 1936. People lost their life savings when firms and banks went bust, and 12 - 15 million men and women - one third of America's population - were unemployed.
In the novella Of Mice and Man, by John Steinback, the main of quite George and Lennie are very good friends. In fact they have been friends for a long time. George always takes care of Lennie and tries to protect him, while Lennie obeys him and looks up to him. "Me an Lennie gonna' roll up a stake" This shows that it is George shows it is his intention to spend the rest of his life with his pal Lennie.
“Because I got you to look after me and you got me to look after you…”For Lennie, George is clearly the most important person in his life. He is his friend, his guardian and his only family. Whenever he does anything wrong, he would always think it as making George angry. He is very afraid of George’s disapproval. He has absolute faith in George, Lennie believes that George will always be there for him, and always give him the best possible.
Furthermore, when he killed Curley’s wife, he said, “I shouldn’t of did that. George’ll be mad.” This shows that everything for him is “George related”. It’s never about whether something is right or wrong; it’s about weather or not George approves of something, he would probably do it.
George, although he is devoted to Lennie, sometimes thinks of Lennie as a major source of trouble. Throughout the story, He has become angry because of the trouble that Lennie has unintentionally caused. For example, when he saw a women with soft smooth red dress in Weed, and he couldn’t help himself and touched the dress. The woman thought this was inappropriate and cried for help. Soon a lot of men with knives were chasing George and Lennie.
