Explain How To Establish Ground Rules With Learners
Explain the ways in which you would establish ground rules with your learners, which underpin appropriate behaviour and respect for others.

When introducing yourself to a new class of students it is very important to identify the objectives for the course and use this first meeting to lay down a set of ground rules.

Ground rules set the boundaries within which the students must work; they enable everyone to have an equal opportunity to carry out their study whilst in the classroom.

An ideal way to discuss this is to split the class into two groups and come up with a set of rules. This enables a neutral ground for discussion and not a comparison between your list and theirs. As well as this, involving two teams can generate some competitive

Ground rules may be established in several ways, the first of these could be to verbalise. This can be done by creating an open discussion with the learners. Allowing them to discuss and agree amongst themselves will raise common as well as personal areas to be addressed. Through the “process of discussion and negotiation” Gravells (2012:93) ground rules can be…

Once the ground rules have been adopted by the group, they will need to be monitored and enforced if necessary in order to maintain a mutually respectful and productive learning environment. As the teacher, it is essential that I ‘set the right example’ and ensure that my behaviour is exemplary while maintaining rapport with the students. My attitude should be one of respect for the students and this should be reciprocated.…

Each and every student is different when it comes to behaviours and respect for others. So agreements have to be made about expected behaviour in the classroom as recommended by Wilson (2008:8 ‘ASSUME NOTHING!’, Ground rules are mutually agreed arrangements between the teacher and the learners, which ensure that the views and needs of all learners are valued and appreciated. It helps learning, easy in the classroom. Students need to know what the teacher expects from them and what they can expect from the teacher during the course. They need to know where the boundaries lie and what will happen if they step over the boundaries. These rules have to be established by thinking carefully, expressing clearly and enforcing consistently. Ground rules can be set either by the teacher, or by the learner or by the teacher and learners together.…

As a teacher/tutor it is important to establish ground rules with the learners, a method to use to do this would be to include the group as a whole to avoid dictating your own ground rules as not all of your learners may agree with one set of rules that may make them feel uncomfortable in their learning environment. A way to create ground rules would be to allow the participants to generate a list of ground rules. Ask them to think about what they would need to ensure a safe environment. Ask them to consider respecting others, for example, not speaking over one another. Also ask the learners to bare in mind peoples cultures and opinions. Allow the group to discuss the ideas amongst themselves .…

Ground rules are used to lay down order, responsibility and accepted behaviours amongst learners. Ground rules are used because ‘all learners require boundaries and rules within which to work’ cites Gravells (2010a:7) with which I concur as we all need rules to work within yet they are used for other reasons such as to reduce anxiety. We set ground rules like ‘all to participate’ and ‘constructive criticism only’ to include all learners and to avoid unconstructive replies which may lead to a sense of being bullied.…
