Experiment: If I Leave A Plant In Continuous Light
Hypothesis: According to the research, if I leave a plant in continuous light, then I expect that the plant will grow/ produce less than a plant in a normal amount of light from 6am to 9pm. This experiment was done, so that indoor growers know if they need to turn off their grow lights at night, or set them on an alarm, so that they can get full potential food production. There are many people without food, so this would help if one can produce more food. Only one of my trials supported my hypothesis, of the plant in normal light will grow more than the plant in constant light. One of the biggest limitations I thought before I stated was how long it would take a plant to grow. Another, is that I had to grow these plants in the winter months, when it is colder and not the natural season of growth. To lessen these limits, the plants were grown under grow lights so that they were given warmth and light, which would help the plant grow. The other limit I was concerned about, was that I was not able to be with the plants everyday (ex. Christmas break). To solve this problem, I worked with Mrs. J.C., by leaving instructions for how to water and care for the plants. To make sure the normal pot got the proper hours of light, I connected it to a timer set to the proper times. While going through this experiment, I found more limitations. In trial one, I believe that the grow lights were not strong enough. This means that the plants did not get enough light or warmth. To handle this limitation, in trial two, I grew the plants under stronger and more intense lights. This solution allowed the plants to be warmer. Another limitation that arose, was the time it takes to grow a tomato seed. To allow for more data to be collected, I changed the seeds in trial two from tomato seeds to pea seeds. Surprises came up when I went through both trials. In trial one, a big surprise was that only one seed germinated out of both pots. I expected to have more germinate. The observations made, were similar to the ones made by Velez-Ramirez in the experiment “Plants under continuous light” Trends in plant science in the U.S. National Library of Medicine. If I were to test again, I would grow the plants for longer, so that I could gather data for produce.
