Exhibition Review
Pictures of the Year When I first walked into the Museum I was not sure what I was going to examine. I had never even been inside a Museum to begin with let alone an art Museum, and now I was required to judge, for the lack of better words, the Pictures of the Year International Exhibition. With that being said I didn’t even know what this exhibition was about. Thinking of only a few things that were on my mind, how do all these Photographs flow together? Are these photographs Art? How am I ever going to complete this assignment? I started out by looking at the photographs behind the receptions desk Stone Throwers which pretty much tells it all in the title the Palestine group named as Stone Throwers. North Korea Collectivism marking the celebration on North Korea’s 100-year birth anniversary of the late leader Kim IL Sung. Congolese Wrestlers displaying wrestling just like it around the world but Congolese like to include magical traditions which involve magic powders, spells and zombie-like transformations of wrestlers. Today when you look at the wrestlers all you get is the fakeness out of it. Nothing that they do looks real cause sometimes you can see the mat give away before they land and when they hit the other person you can see them move before the punch or smack even gets there. Now I don’t think that I would consider it art just by them self but you add the other pictures with them and that is when your story starts to come together and you know that you can just create a work of art.
Then I came upon the message right beside these pictures. Explaining to me the question that I was looking for at the beginning with a few key words standing out, the exhibition presents a dynamic range of photographs representing global events of 2012. So I went back and started thinking about what story from 2012 each photograph had to tell. I’m going to start talking about Damon Winter’s Haiti.
