Exceptional Nursing Leaders
During my clinical time I have met a lot of amazing nurses. This semester I have clinical at Providence Medical Center on their OB unit. Although I have only spent a few times there this eight weeks I have met some exceptional nurses. Judy, who is one of the nurse managers on the floor I believe, meets all the criteria of being an exceptional leader.

This nurse has spent a lot of time with Providence advocating and ensuring that all women get the care they deserve. She has made one of her main goals to give every woman she comes in contact with knowledgeable and empathetic care during their pregnancy. I believe that Judy does a great job in this aspect. I have seen her discuss a patient with a doctor and really stand up for the patient because their birthing process was being rushed for no beneficial reason. This can sometimes be nerve racking because as a nurse you have to choose between what you patient wants and what the doctor is telling you. As a nurse manager she really does have heart for what she does. “Authentic leaders care for themselves and the people they lead, and they compassion is genuine” (Marquis & Huston, 2015, p. 61). She wears her heart on her sleeve and really does love leading and caring for others.

The AANC Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environment (2016) has six essential standards. Those standards are skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, and authentic leadership. The following is how the nurse manager I am discussing meets each of these criteria.

Communication- Judy shows great communication skills by listening closely to all staff members and her patients. She focuses on finding solutions to each and every problem and making sure any communication issues are resolved on the

Judy takes time to remind all staff that if they need anything she is there to help at all cost.

Effective Decision Making- Not only the nurse manager on the unit but the rest of the staff at Providence all get to work autonomously and act on what they believe is best for their patient. “The healthcare organization ensures that nurses in positions from the bedside to the boardroom participate in all levels of decision making” (AACN, 2016, p. 5).

Recognition- The nurses on the OB unit do a great job at recognizing one another. I hear a lot of positive talk between the nurses and I think that is great. The staff really does bond with one another and the nurse manager on the unit makes sure all staff members are recognized when accomplishing something important or new.

Authentic Leadership- As I have stated before Judy is an amazing leader on her unit. She makes sure all patients are given the best care possible and that she has a team that stands behind her in achieving this

    Nursing sensitive indicators reflect the structure, process and outcomes of nursing care. The structure of nursing care is indicated by the supply of nursing staff, the skill level of the nursing staff, and the education/certification of nursing staff. Process indicators measure aspects of nursing care such as assessment, intervention, and RN job satisfaction. Patient outcomes that are determined to be nursing sensitive are those that improve if there is a greater quantity or quality of nursing care. ("Nursing world," 2013) Having knowledge of these indicators hard-wired and put into practice in daily care of patients, could have assisted the nurses involved in this particular case in many ways. Knowing the risk of pressure ulcer development with the use of restraints could have helped the nurse prevent one in this patient. The bedside care providers, the nurse, as well as, the CNA would have recognized the reddened area as the first stage in pressure ulcer development. They would have been more meticulous with skin assessments and repositioning with the use of restraints in this elderly patient. Also, if the CNA had a better understanding of when to appropriately use restraints and how to manage a restrained patient she wouldn’t have positioned the patient on his back after he returned to bed. Another nursing sensitive indicator is patient and family satisfaction which was not taken into account in this situation. The nurse so easily dismissed the daughter’s concerns about the dietary mix up and blew off her concerns regarding what her father was served. Nursing sensitive quality indicators are an important part of the equation when it comes to establishing evidence-based practice guidelines.     The nurse I chose as a mentor has wonderful qualities that I hope to have after I also obtain a BSN. She shows great communication between nurses, doctors, and families. She is able to explain any situation in a professional manor. Her confidence is shown through her professionalism, for example, when she addresses information of medication and disease process to a family, she explains thoroughly, which builds trust with the family, shows her confidence and accountability, and she takes the time shows care. I know that being a nurse is a stressful job but nurses are able to find emotional stability and this nurse does just that by finding the balance of being happy in one room of a patient who was just extubated and doing well, then she will go to her next patient who isn’t doing as well and have empathy for the family, she says the right things, keeps her own emotions stable and nonjudgmental, and changes her whole thought process room to room. She pays attention to detail by noticing the wrong medication dose before giving to a patient. She has great problem-solving skills by helping residents and doctors come up with solutions in critical situations, she has quick responses with traumas. For example, she noticed something not right with her patient after a certain IV medication was given. She shows respect to all medical staff and families by staying professional, culture sensitive, and always shows a positive attitude.     Opinions of the staff should be valued, therefore healthcare providers should also play an active role in the decision making process. This can be accomplished by establishing a Unit Practice Council which would facilitate communication between staff and management. Monthly meetings should be held to address and resolve issues in a timely manner. Since patient care involves collaboration of healthcare providers, I recommend that mandatory teambuilding workshops be offered for all personnel to encourage effective communication between the various disciplines.     For this week's discussion I chose to focus on the importance of mentorship in nursing. This will focus on identifying the characteristics of mentors that have (or could be) most successful in recruiting and training diverse nurses and nurse faculty. At my facility me and another fellow nurse are head of our units mentoring program. This program that we have implemented focuses on the new graduated nurse and follows them through their first year of nursing. The new graduated nurse is paired up with a seasoned day shift and night shift nurse to answer any questions, facilitate a mentor-new graduate relationship and help orient the new nurse and try to build a strong, confident nurse.
