Examples Of Tino In Tangerine
Nobody would expect that Tino would even attempt standing up for himself against Erik, nor could they imagine how Paul “saved” Dino’s miraculous shot. But the odds approached and those events did happen in Tangerine. For those characters, they clarified possible instead of impossible, which lead people to think that Tangerine is a book of possibility. Tino always believed that he gets what he wants whenever he wants it, so if that meant for him to smack talk Erik, so be it. Paul figured it was practically impossible for someone to physically get up in Erik’s face the way Tino did, based off his reaction to the incident. Even though it may not have ended up the way Tino liked it, there must have been a slight amount of shock and pride in …show more content…
It was almost like he felt like he betrayed them. In spite of the fact that they were kind to him before, it wasn’t like they would respect him as much as they did earlier. It was a bad situation that would be too much for Paul to handle, so when Tangerine Middle had to go against Lake Windsor, he was nervous. Not only because they were good, but because Paul would feel ashamed by his old school. Although nobody said it was impossible for Lake Windsor players to still show admiration towards Paul. Despite the fact that they tied 2-2, on page 198, Gino says “‘It’s cool. I don’t mind. It’s only a game Mars’”. What this shows is that Gino has his no anger when he came across Paul, which means that he respected him with his actions when he moved to Tangerine Middle. It’s almost like it drives the reader to think that this could end up badly for Paul, but beating the unimaginable it was the other way around. To add on, on page 198 it says “Luis Gruz pounded me on the back and said ‘I didn’t know you were goalie! Great game! Great game”. If Paul didn’t have a great game, the number one reason would have been because the Lake Windsor soccer team would have scored on

Erik Fisher previously slapped Tino Cruz, Luis’ younger brother, across the face. Luis Cruz purposefully enraged Erik for revenge for Tino by taunting, “You would smack a little kid in the face, right? Why don’t you come over here and try to smack me” (211)? Luis’ provocation caused Erik to order Arthur to whack a blackjack across Luis’ head. This caused the aneurysm (weakness in a blood vessel) in Luis’ head to further weaken and burst, causing a massive stroke, ultimately leading to Luis’ death. Once Luis died, Paul pondered, “The truth about Luis is obvious to all of the people around him… They know what really happened… Why would that seem so mysterious to me” (249)? While reflecting, Paul came across his reality. He was living in “bits and pieces of the truth” (249), while everyone else “know what really happened” (249). Paul’s reflection indicates that he has realized the truth, that he was living in lies while others were not. Luis’ decision to provoke Erik caused Paul to reflect and uncover the truth of his…

One of the reasons why Paul is considered the noblest character is because of his loyalty towards people. First, in the beginning of the novel, one of Paul’s friend Kemmerich is badly injured and had to have his leg amputated, sadly things are getting any better for Kemmerich and in the course of time he eventually dies. Paul describes himself as “wretched with helplessness” (Remarque 30), and even though he was like that, he stayed with his friend until his very last seconds. This shows that Paul was loyal to his friendship with Kemmerich no matter how hard it was for him. Likewise, when he is injured with Kropp and they are on their way to the hospital, Kropp has a fever on their way to the hospital and has to stay at a Catholic…

Being that Paul and his friends are still teenagers, they can crack jokes and banter with each other during the hardest of times. “But by far the most important result was that it awakened in us a strong, practical sense of esprit de corps, which in the field developed into the finest thing that arose out of the war-comradeship” (26-27). The french word, esprit de corps, translates to “Spirit of Men” which is very relative to the story. The only way to survive mentally and emotionally is to take comfort from fellow men, otherwise, one would lose their minds. As Paul sees the effects of war, his friends remind him that they will be there for each other as a “pact”and they can all make light of the horrors of war. Knowing that you have the support from your friends is a comforting thought, especially to remember whilst serving on the battlefield. “I open his collar and place his head more comfortably...I climb down, take out my handkerchief, spread it out, push it under and scoop up the yellow water that strains through into the hollow of my hand. He gulps it down. I fetch some more. Then, I unbutton his tunic…

When one of Paul’s best friends Kemmerich dies, Paul is the one who has to tell his mom about the bad news. One quote that points to this is, “I must go and see Kemmerich’s mother… This quaking, sobbing woman who shakes me and cries out on me: ‘Why are you living then, when he is dead?’” (181). Paul had enough bravery to talk to his dead friend’s mother about how her son died. Paul has to lie to Kemmerich’s mother or else she would have been even more devastated than she had been when she heard the bad news. Paul was devastated when his friend died but stayed brave because he knew with war came death. An example that also proves this is, “Kat falls. We two are alone… Couldn’t I shoot myself quickly in the foot so as to be able to go with him… ‘he is stone dead’ … Do I walk? Have I feet still? … Then I know nothing more” (287-291). Paul is even more affected by Kat’s death than Kemmerich’s death. Kat and Paul were best friends and stayed together all the time. Paul did not know what to do when Kat died, he is at a loss of words, and wanted to hurt himself to stay with Kat and go wherever he went. He was courageous even though he witnessed an awful death. Although Paul is a good comrade and a smart decision maker, his best trait is that he is a brave…

In that scene, Paul is in his backyard. Almost all of the backyard scenes have been negative. There haven’t been any good memories there that Erik hasn’t tainted. All the time Paul listens to Erik and Arthur “kicking a football into a net in the backyard.” Paul describes it as a “short violent sound” which shows how violent he knows Erik is, just like he saw when Erik punched Tino.…

    Pauls Case

I think Paul and Connie are alike in so many ways especially because they were both teenagers who had a special love for music. One of the way I think they were alike is that they both had great and very vivid imagination. In the story Where are you going, Where have you been, Connie spent some of her summer, “thinking and dreaming about the boys she meet, But all the boys fell back and dissolved into a single face that was not even a face, but an idea, a feeling.” This clearly indicates her how much of a great imagination she had. In the sorry Paul’s Case, Paul, “telling them the most incredible stories of his familiarity with these people, acquaintance with the soloists and having lunch with them.” What a great imagination Paul had! In my opinion I think they were both liars in the story Where are you going, Where have u been,” her mother was so simple, Connie thought, that it was may cruel to fool her fool her so much.” This clearly indicates she was a liar. In the Paul’s Case, when Paul went to the office, “said his mother and father had been abroad, and he had come down to await the arrival of their steamer.” This is evidence that Paul also was a liar.…

The essay “Rowing the Bus” is has a lot to do with the problems that kids are having in school. I also, believe that these kids are in this situation, because of their parents. These parents have to pay more attention to their children’s actions or check on their child in school. A lot of these kids that get picked on at school end up being serial killer or child molesters and mad at the world. Once these kids lose their self respect, they get depressed and ashamed of whom they are. I think that Paul was wrong, for what he did to Gorge at the school playground. I bet Gorge would have been a good friend, if Paul would have given him a chance. That made Paul change his state of mind, and he hated the way the bullies was treating these harmless students. So that made him stand up against people who tease or hurt who are defenseless. This essay is a good example for, those who are going through the same situation.…

    Tangerine Observation

When I think of a tangerine, I think of a smaller orange. Round, small, and orange. To me it’s not the most interesting fruit, maybe that’s why nothing rhymes with orange because all the other words realized that oranges aren’t fun so they decided not to invite it to the rhyming party. As I look at my tangerine, I’m noticing that it’s not fully an orange. There are hints of yellow with brownish spots throughout the tangerine, which resembles a sunset’s palette with a pebbled skin. From a top view, the tangerine is circular with a few dents, while from its sides are oval. At the top of the tangerine, there is a small green stem with hints of yellow with five leaves at its base, creating a star. There are four dominant blemishes…
