Examples Of Social Injustice In A Thousand Splendid Suns
After reading, “A Thousand Splendid Suns”, “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” and “Night”, it’s easy to see that the life of a Pinnacle High School student is much easier than the people we read about in these stories. The stories describe the tormented lives that they endure. Although different, they all share one thing in common, which is the concept of social injustice. In the novel, “A Thousand Splendid Suns” By Khaled Hosseini, the underlying theme of social injustice is portrayed throughout the story. Mariam, a 15 year old girl, is forced against her will to marry an older man named Rasheed. They moved to Kabul where Rasheed physically and verbally abused Mariam on a daily basis. The young girl slept in her own room, but was awakened one of the nights when Rasheed crept into her bed and raped her. The brutal description of the rape is a disturbing example of not being safe in her new home. Mariam’s mom once told her that men always blame women for their actions and events that happen. “Night” by Elie Wiesel, recalls the author’s experience surviving the Holocaust. One of the first horrifying images was live babies being tossed into firepits. Seeing such awful things would frighten even the strongest people. When he and his father are crammed onto a night train to be transfer to another camp, he witnesses a son kill his father for a piece of bread. He knew at that moment, he would never want to become like that. Those people were forced to put themselves into survival mode, so they were clearly desperate. In the last few paragraphs of the novel, Eliezer Wiesel talks about the first time he sees his reflection and how he resembles a corpse.
