Examples Of Materialism In You May Ask Yourself
Culture differs from one location to another because every person or group of people are different, and have different values. Here in the US for example there are many different cultures, material and nonmaterial. As Dalton Conley defines it in the book ‘You May Ask Yourself’ material culture is “everything that is a part of our constructed, physical environment, including technology”. We get most of these from advertising and trends by celebrities. We see a celebrity wearing the latest smart watch and in out materialistic culture we feel the need to go buy a smart watch. We live in a materialistic culture. We see an ad on TV or hear an ad on the radio and it sells us a lifestyle. So we buy into that if we buy that product we will have a better life. This is why most

As Dalton Conley defines it in the book ‘You May Ask Yourself’ a nonmaterial culture is “values, beliefs, behaviors, and social norms”. This can cause much controversy throughout society. For instance, in the news there is all the attention on Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand and pay tribute during the national anthem. He is trying to make a point that he is making a stand on black oppression. To many people in our nation including myself this was an outrage. These people do not agree with what his belief in this is. To me this act is disrespectful and just a blatant slap in the face to all the men and woman that have fought and lost loved ones in the armed services. To others who may agree with him see this action as a stand for black oppression. Another one would be Tim Tebow kneeling and praying after he made a touchdown. This is his pulling from his nonmaterial culture. He has a strong belief and family background in a Christian household. He was taught to thank god for good things that happen in his life. Even though both of these examples have to do with football, they show two different ends of the spectrum of nonmaterial
