Real Monsters of Beowulf
(The Evils Represented by the Three Monsters in Beowulf) Evil is a common thing in all stories. The story tellers usually create monsters to represent these evils that are in the stories and many people can see the evil that they represent. Sometime this in not the case and those people need someone to tell them what that monster represents that applies to real life. Most of these story evils represents an evil in the real world, like the evil in the beloved Lion King was Scar, who represents the evil of envy. The ancient story of Beowulf also has evils represented by the monsters that are in the story. Each of the three Beowulf monsters, Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and the Dragon, represent three different types of evils of the world. The first of Beowulf’s monsters represents the physical evils. Grendel was the first monster fought by Beowulf in the epic of similar name. The mighty Geat warrior fought with this beast in hand-to-hand combat. Beowulf physically fought with the Monster which gives the idea that the Grendel symbolize the Physical evil in this world. Another name for these evils is evils that we can see with the human eye. This monster symbolizes the evil of the mind. Grendel’s Mother is a witch and witches are known for being smart and deceptive. Beowulf didn’t fight this monster with just his strength he went in fully armored up and with his own sword, which didn’t really help him in the end. To defeat this monster, Beowulf had to outsmart Grendel’s Mother and use her own sword, the one she hung on a wall, to slay her. Grendel’s Mother almost killed Beowulf because she fought more with her mind than any sword or strength. She also killed one of Hrothgar’s men at night while she was hidden, which helps lead to the decision that she also symbolizes hidden evil like fear and revenge, or
