Fifty-Fifty Americanism In The Crucible everyone is one hundred percent Americanism which means they all are pure; well they are all supposed to be. I have chosen the quote, “There can be no fifty- fifty Americanism in this country, there is room here for only one hundred percent Americanism, only for those who are Americans and nothing else.” The three main points I will be covering will be adultery, church, and how John Proctor lied and signed his name. Then I will tie how this went with the quote I have chosen. In their Puritan religion there is a law about adultery and no one shall commit it. Just because John Proctor does not go to church does not mean he is not pure. John tells the truth about most of the things in this story. He also tells everyone about his adulterous lechery. When standing in the court room he just lets everything out about Abigail, the witch craft, and everyone else. In my own personal opinion, I feel like anyone could go to church and still sin as well as not go to church and still sin. That even goes with if you are a very well practiced individual and attend church then you should not sin and be pure. Most people are two faced and do both but lie about one, and most people are back stabbing individuals and get you in trouble when you did not even do such a thing that they have said. So you do not have to go to church to be pure, but that is just my opinion. Look at everyone else in the story and they all go to church but they are not pure and they know who they are that have sinned. People do stupid things when they are under …show more content…
Also, if he did sign his name it would basically mean he would sign his soul away. All of this happens in scene four of the story, if he did sign his name, his last name would go down and would not be found again. I feel like John Proctor did the right thing so he does not ruin lives. He finally realized that he will hurt the lives of his friends and family. John came to a kind of peace with himself. When he came to a peace with his life he chose to be hung. As getting hung as a free man must have been hard when you know you did not do anything or even harm a single person. I know that I could not do what he has done; to be hung for no reason and live with the fact that you are going to die and you will be leaving your family and friends would not be an easy thing to
