Example Of Website Reliability Report
Website credibility is important today because the web has become a major information source for many people. When searching for information, how does one determine if the information is reliable? Since I am anticipating becoming a Nurse Practitioner in the future, the rationale for selecting this site was to access evidenced based information regarding quality measures for diseases and treatment plans. I used Google as the search engine to locate a website related to evidence based guidelines. The site selected was http:// www.guideline.gov/imdex.aspx. The site’s domain (. gov) is considered a reliable source for information and the information is from a reputable government agency, the Department of Health and Human Services. The purpose of the site was listed as a public resource for guidelines that are evidenced based. It was difficult finding recent articles discussing credibility of websites since most of the interesting articles were published more than five years ago. I did locate two recent articles as listed in the references related to the subject. These articles assisted me in determining the credibility of this website by ensuring that I look for impartiality, popularity of the site, currency of information, and …show more content…
The authors did express their opinions, however the information in the article was backed by research and therefore evidenced based. The website did not include any advertising. The website was difficult to navigate through but this this could have been because there was so much information located in various areas. In addition, I was not familiar with the site and therefore not sure where to locate the information quickly. The website did have a privacy and electronic policies tab listed at the bottom of the site. The information also included links to the Federal Government Privacy

I have researched many websites after Googling a medical condition and then compare the information. Information sites like WebMD provide useful information. However, they must not be a replacement for advice from a medical professional. I firmly believe that consumers need to educate themselves, and I have often heard patients discussing with the doctor about what they have read on the web about their condition and possible treatment options.…

Credibility of the CMS.gov website is determined by scrutiny of evidence based criteria (Anderson & Klemm, 2008). A systematic approach for evaluating health-related internet websites found on the Internet must be utilized. The following criteria will be used for evaluation: authority, information, objectivity, ease of navigation, and privacy and security ("Week 3 Lesson, Chamberlain College of Nursing, Course NR500 Foundational Concepts and Applications," 2011). An examination of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) can also provide clues to the credibility of the website. Websites published by government agencies or non-profit organizations ending in .gov, .org or .edu are the most credible and are the best choice for finding trustworthy website information. This website examination will review this factor also.…

The first website that I will evaluate is MedicineNet. This site has been around since 1996 and is owned and operated by WebMD. “It provides easy-to-read, in-depth, authoritative medical information for consumers via its robust, user-friendly, interactive website” (MedicineNet, 2010, para.1). The site does not have an author or director; rather it is controlled by qualified executives in the fields of medicine, healthcare, Internet technology and business and is “doctor-produced” by more than 70 physicians.…

The way that I would determine if the sources are reliable and relevant is by verifying the author. I would select at least one document that has been peer reviewed. According to University of Phoenix University Library Interactive Tutorial (2012), “Peer reviewed documents have been reviewed by at least one expert before publication. It focuses on scholarly material and usually contains extensive discussion of: research methods used by the author; substantial statistical analysis; extensive list of works cited at the end of the article or text”. The fact that an expert has reviewed the data would give me an acceptance of the information that has been published. When documents are peer reviewed it would decrease the chances of the author being able to successfully convey any sort of bias or slant on the information submitted.…
