It was a steaming, humid day of August in 2013. Nick & I were playing outside when I asked “Can I use your new longboard”. He said “ Yes but you might want to wear a helmet”. I said “I’ll Be fine”.
In a blink of an eye, I was on the street bleeding very bad. All I saw was pebbles and asphalt. When I came out of the darkness I saw my mother washing down my face with a wash cloth. Just after she pulled it away, it was red as a rose pedal. I asked how bad it was and she said “Not that bad.” Knowing Mothers sometimes under exaggerate I instantly stood up ran to the mirror. There was a visible cut all the way down to my cheek. You could see the bone in my forehead.
Immediately after that we went to the ER we had to wait briefly for the doctor be able to see me. While we were walking endless corridors and hallways to his office he, made a terrible joke. We arrived at his office and he took off my bandage on my head. He said it was not a major injury, but it would need a couple of days to heal.

My mother said it is necessary for me to go, but she let me stay home after a bit of begging. The accident left me with a scar on my face . After that incident, I learned that a helmet can bring about a difference. You need to wear protective gear when doing most activities. From then on I wore a helmet while I was on a skateboard. To do that even though I did not want to, I had to think about all the consequences of not wearing a helmet. I was lucky because I received an electric dirt bike and fell off two more times. I could have gotten seriously gotten hurt both times without a helmet. Being open to continuous learning helped me not make that mistake

After that, they stitched up my leg. They thought about stitching my hand, but they decided not to. While they stitched up my leg I watched and asked questions. At first, the doctor did not want to tell me anything because he did not want to scare me, but my dad told him it was alright. Even my dad was too scared to watch what they were doing to me, but I watched the whole thing. I had a total of 11 stitches; seven stitches were internal and five were external.…

The thirteenth emoji going left to right, that has heart eyes and has its lips perked out is relateable to a part of the book where Jerome and Rory are kissing intensively. On page 200 it states "I started pressing my lips into his cheek - just a hint of a kiss,.....I felt his shoulders release, and he made a little noise that was partly a groan, partly a sigh. He kissed my neck up, up, up to my ear......My body flushed itself with all the good chemicals that it takes to reserve for making out. On page 201 it states " He told me scary Jack the Ripper facts, and I had the sudden need to make out with him until I ran out of breath. I would have continued indefinitely if........."…

“Graduation, the hush-hush magic time of frills and gifts and congratulations and diplomas.” You weren’t lying when you said that Maya Angelou. May 19th, 2013 I had dreamt of that day for almost four years. I know I can’t be the only person who feel this way. I remember it as if it was just yesterday. So many different emotions going through my mind all at once. Happiness, Sadness, I felt relieved because it was almost over but at the same time I felt anxious and overly excited to just leave and go far away. 389 seniors were going to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. I had a neck brace around my neck and IV’s stuck all in my arms. I started to panic, I was lost, confused and scared. My best friend was there in the ambulance trying to calm me down. But still, all I could think about was the reaction of my parents when they found out what happened. Once we got to the hospital, the paramedics took me to Emergency Care. The doctors ran many tests on me: MRI’s, CAT Scans, and X-Rays, whatever test you can name – they ran on me. As I waited for my results, the doctors came in and explained to me what happened. An intoxicated driver with a gun ran the red light and hit me in a head on collision. The driver not only totaled my mother’s car but also totaled his own car too. The good thing was that he was okay. I didn’t know what to be happier about; the fact that the other driver was fine or that the accident was not my fault. Selfish right? But I’m sure if you were me at the time, you would think the same thing.…

The minute I got home, I rushed into my parent's bedroom where my mother was watching TV. I told her about my eventful night and that I would quite enjoy going to the hospital to get a confirmation of my suspicions. She drove me to the ER where we would promptly sit for twenty minutes before they could assign us to a room. Once we were assigned to a room, where we would wait for the doctor for another ten minutes. The doctor then came into the room wearing a white coat, glasses that were far too small for his head, and a clipboard in his hand. He talked to us swiftly about my nose, saying that I definitely needed to get an X-ray, and for that we would have to wait for about an hour and a half. Finally, they came to take me for the X-ray, on the way there I caught a glimpse of myself in a small mirror: I looked like some sort of ogre with my colossal nose, covering almost my entire face. I got back from the X- ray and shortly after that, the doctor came back into my room, smiled at me, and with a laugh, he said, “Well, it's broken alright!” My mom and I both thought he was joking until he brought us over to his unpretentious office to show us the actual X- ray. We could visibly see a long crack from the top to the very bottom of my nose. Once we got back to our room, he put a big, bulky, cast like item, called a splint on my nose, to which I would have a long and painful recovery in. From then on out I always left my free hand up in the air to guard my nose from that untrustworthy…

It was a perfectly normal Saturday night, until I sat on the couch. I expected to enjoy a funny movie with my dad, but instead I got a trip to the hospital. I sat on the couch, and then I felt a sting in my elbow. At first, it felt like I got a shot at the doctor, but it slowly got worse, and felt more like a knife slicing into my elbow. I winced and sprung up from the couch. I squinted and my eyes scanned the spot where I just sat down. Aha, I thought. There was a small piece of plastic, and it looked like it broke off from a container.…

Early in our trip to the Mason City hospital, I talked to my mom on the phone. I felt extremely bad for my mom because I knew that her worst nightmare was that I get seriously injured. I told her on the phone that I was okay and that it didn’t hurt at all, doing my best to calm her down. The EMT that was in the back with my dad and I put in the IV needle and started giving me pain killers. My head felt glued to the stretcher. I just laid perfectly still and felt my body relax. My only job was to tell the EMT if I could feel him pinching my toes, which was slowly getting lighter and lighter. Once the ambulance arrived at the hospital everything happened in the blink of an eye. I was pushed along to the ER where I met my mom and the rest of my family. The reunion was short lived, because soon after I arrived, a doctor kicked them all out and popped my ankle back into place. The pain came as a shock, but the medicine quickly took over and soon I was painless again. They wrapped my ankle up to prevent motion and rolled me into a room to stay the night. Bright and early the next morning the nurses woke me up and prepared me for surgery. I was exhausted and did my best to follow their directions, but as soon as I hit the operating table, I was out. I opened my eyes and I was back in the room I spent the night in. I fell in and out of sleep for the next couple of hours until I was fully recovered. The nurses brought me some crutches and told me I was good to leave. I was amazed at how they were just going to let me go, but I did not hesitate to get out of…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…
