Example Of Indirect Characterization
Have you ever tried to to understand how someone thinks or acts? That’s an example of indirect characterization. There is also motivation and direct characterization too! The writer uses these methods to analyze how a character acts or reacts. The way an author reveals a character is called characterization.

To begin with, indirect characterization is your point of view of the character. How they speak, look, think, their effects, and actions. For instance, the character Mr. Nuttel from “The Open Window” it explains, “Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a succession of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was supposed to be undergoing.” Mr. Nuttel has doubts about going to the retreat because he can’t have any stress at all, as an effect of his anxiety. He’s an older gentleman and he’s very awkward; he talks in rhymes. Mr. Nuttel has a frequency to run from his problems. Mr. Nuttel is one example of indirect characterization. …show more content…
In the short story, “The Open Window,” the character Vera is portrayed as curious, talkative, nosy, and extremely friendly with to the people in the rehab center. That’s her personality! In paragraph 1 of the short story, it explains, “...said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen.” Vera is very nosy so she talks to Mr. Nuttel about why he is at the rehab center.     The literary techniques used are defined as followed. The narrator is the person telling the story, the voice that an author takes on to tell a story. There are two types of narration: omission man, or the character in the story. The omission man knows everything and everyone you are able to trust this narrator because they are un-bias.     Characterization is the combination of all the things and author does to create the personality of a character in a piece of literature. For example, throughout the story, the read learns a lot about the character of Jack. We learn that he is a very determined young boy. He does not like to give up when he fails; he likes to keep going until he is successful. In the beginning of the novel, Ralph, Jack, and Simon come across a pig and Jack wants to kill it for meat.
