The richness and consistency of the annual Nile River flood, combined with isolation due to the deserts of the east and west, are leading factors into why Egypt is one of the world’s great civilizations. On the other hand, Israel’s strategic location has played an important role in world history, despite its small size and lack of resources. Although the imperial structures of Ancient Egypt and Israel have historical similarities in political and social hierarchy such as a monarchic systems of government and grave respect for their women, they have distinct differences that distinguish them from each other such as religion and their beliefs.…
In the introduction, he provides a brief overview of scholarly thought regarding the Old Testament literature and Ancient near East literature and how perspectives have changed over the last 50 years. Oswalt states at the time he was introduced to the subject, scholars believed the Old Testament and its theology stood alone from other Ancient Near East religions. He now contends that present day scholars believe the Old Testament is just one of many Ancient Near East religions. Oswalt concludes his introduction with a substantial claim. He emphasizes that theological claims are inseparable from historical claims. Oswalt states that trustworthiness must be contingent upon both the theological and historical claims. If the historical claims are patently…
In his introduction, Oswalt discusses how roughly sixty years ago it was widely agreed upon in academic circles that the Israelite religion stood apart from their neighbor’s Semitic religion. However, the tide has now turned, for the world of academia largely affirms the Israelite faith is just another religion in the sea of Ancient Near Eastern mythology and religion. Oswalt questions why this drastic change has come. He believes the data from the past is no different then the data used today. Therefore, the problem is how one interprets the data. He discusses the use of “accidentals” and “essentials” while studying the similarities and differences between the Old Testament and mythology.…

In “Canaanites, Cowboys, and Indians”, Robert Warrior primarily explains the biblical story of the Exodus and how it should not be used as a liberating text in general, but especially why it is inappropriate in the case of the Native Americans. Warriors starts off by saying that Christians try to fight for the rights of Native Americans and that because of the church’s prosperous financial, political, and institutional resources, this help is much needed. Nevertheless, Warrior then explains that the inclusion of Native Americans in Christian political praxis is difficult mainly because Christians have a different way of going about the struggle for justice than most Native Americans, and they refuse the idea that Indians might know best how…
In the beginning of Genesis God created the heavens and earth. He saw it was good, so he decided to create a man out of the dirt He had created. Doing so he breathed life into the first man made in His image. So Adam did not have anyone that was close to him to relate to. Next God took a rib from the man, closed the open place (where the rib was taken from), created a helpmate for man. God called her woman her name was Eve (Genesis 3:6). They were not to eat of one tree in the middle of the garden. Then along comes Satan disguised as a serpent to tempt Eve, to commit sin against God. (Merrill, p.,57)…
When beginning a study in history one must approach it in a broader view. It is simply insufficient to look at one aspect of a society and claim that the society is now understood. Instead an in depth approach must be taken to determine not only the cultural pieces that identify a society but also the environmental impacts that molded the society into what we know it as today. In the following paragraphs I will be explaining how the different environments of Mesopotamia and Egypt shaped their cultural traits.…
