Examining the Skills of Famous Business Leaders

I chose to examine the skills of Cathleen Black and Warren Buffett, two successful business leaders. Both have achieved great success and an amassed large fortune, although Buffet’s fortune is substantially larger than Blacks, but Black’s is nothing to sneeze at. Even though they have both been successful they went about it in entirely different ways with an entirely different skill set. Black’s bottom line approach differs from Buffett’s investment in companies he deemed undervalued; once purchased Buffett took a more hands off approach to the company letting the managers continue to do a great job which contrasted Black’s failure to produce and be discarded approach.
In terms of power both leaders had personalized power. Both showed initiative at an early age, Buffett would sell goods door to door and bought his first shares of stock at age 11. (Bio True Story, 2013) Black, while attending an all-girls catholic high school changed the spelling of her name to stand out. (New York Times, 2010) They both had legitimate power while serving as CEO of a company or sitting on the board of directors. Where they differed was the remaining 4 sources of a leader’s power. Black’s only other source of power was coercive. Being in the cut throat industry of advertising, Black often set very high standards or numbers and if they were not met the person responsible would be terminated. Buffett on the other hand used every other source of power but coercive. He rewarded his employees and would take input of what they wanted, for instance he let the employees delegate which charity receives their money when the norm was when executives would donate to the money to their own children’s schools, churches, or their own organizations. He also had expert and referent power. He studied business and had been making investments since he was 11 years old. Whereas Black

    Executive A’s style of leadership is most closely related to that of a level 5 leader. Level 5 leaders blend the paradoxical combination of deep personal humility with intense personal will (Collins, 2001). In the situation given for this scenario it seems apparent that executive A has many of the traits that would be used to describe a level 5 leader. Executive A is described as driven, highly ambitious and solely focused on the success of the company; these are all traits of a level 5 leader. These types of leaders are routinely described as showing great humility; this trait is evident in executive A’s reluctance to take recognition for the company’s achievements while routinely crediting other management in the organization. Playing into the idea of humility, this also seems apparent in the way that executive A is quick to accept accountability for errors.     1. Simon Brocklebank Fowler is a great CEO and an even better leader. He can sell anything. Simon obviously has perfected many organizational behavior concepts as he has grown throughout his lifetime even though he did not elaborate on which ones specifically. Simon went to Cambridge, which is a top level secondary school in the UK. Simon ended up switching from a history major to finance and ended up working for a bank. Simon also ended up running for Parliament but was unsuccessful, although he did learn a lot through that experience. He worked for a failing franchise and had to sell things straight on his credibility alone. Simon stated that he had to do a lot of research to help sell his pitch to his consumers. He then ended up going to Citigate, which is a smaller firm, but he actually had people working for him which gave him leverage. Citigate went from 200 to 2,000 people in 4 years in different countries making this company a global company. By making Citigate a global company, their profits grew significantly in size and increased the brand recognition of Citigate. Simon is a great leader in many ways. When he walks into a room, you can feel his presence. Simon does not only look in the presence, but in the future as well. He told our class, “ask yourself ever year what does success look like in 1 year? How about in 10 years?” Simon knows that the world is always adapting and is telling us we have to adapt with it if we want to be successful. Simon is also always trying to get better.
