Lecture 10 LAYOUT Lecture aims • to understand the requirements for design rules • to translate simple circuit designs to layout • to appreciate different layout styles • complex gate layout • standard cell layout

The main aims of this lecture are to understand how we can abstract away the detailed requirements for IC layout and produce a standard set of design rules which when used in conjunction with the abstracted layout can generate a full set of masks for IC fabrication. We will also look at a range of layout styles appropriate for generating more generalised layouts such as those required for producing standard cell libraries..

Layout Design Rules
• Designs are represented by geometries on specific layers • Each layer in the layout represents a process during manufacture • Design rules set the limitations on the layout geometries • They are a consequence of the methods used to manufacture the devices

We will now look at the layout of our devices in more detail and look at how we can develop a set of scaleable design rules. We represent the stages in manufacture as a set of layers in the design process. Each layer has a set of geometries (polygons etc) which represent the features to be reproduced at that stage of the process. It is clear that we must have a set of minimum feature sizes for each layer and a set of values for minimum spacing between features on each layer and between features on different layers.     A CAD model can quickly display an engineer’s ideas in a realistic way. And those models can be used to generate technical drawings that can communicate the information necessary to make the idea a reality. In order to generate a 3D model, designs must start with sketches that are generated within the CAD program. These computer generated sketches will appear resemble hand drawn sketches in geometry (the combination of points, lines, and shapes), but have big advantages over hand drawn sketches. One important difference between a freehand sketch and a CAD sketch is accuracy. The lines of a CAD sketch can be drawn perfectly straight, with start and end points that occur in exact locations in space. By using numeric (dimensional) constraints a line may also be given precise length, placed a specific distance from another sketch feature, or constrained to be oriented at a specific angle from another straight line. By applying geometric constraints a line can be made perfectly horizontal or vertical. If more than one line is being sketched, they can be made perfectly parallel or perpendicular, collinear, or equal in length. Lines can be constrained to be tangent to circles or arcs, and two circles can be constrained to be concentric.     An engineering design must perform properly in spite of dimensional variation. To achieve this, engineering design requirements must be expressed as assembly tolerance limits. The designer must assign limits to the gaps, clearances and overall dimensions of an assembly which are critical to performance. Assembly tolerance limits are applied to the statistical distribution of the assembly variations predicted by tolerance analysis to estimate the number of assemblies which will be within the specifications. Designers need to control more than just gaps and clearances in assemblies. Orientation and position of features may also be important to performance. To be a comprehensive design tool, a tolerance analysis system must provide a set of assembly tolerance specifications which covers a wide range of common design requirements. A system of assembly tolerance specifications patterned after ANSI Y14.5 has been proposed [Carr 93]. Those ANSI Y14.5 feature controls which require a datum appear to be useful as assembly controls. However, there is a distinct difference between component tolerance and assembly tolerance specifications, as seen in Fig. 9. In the component tolerance specification shown, the parallelism tolerance zone is defined as parallel to datum A, a reference surface on the same part. By contrast, the assembly parallelism tolerance defines a tolerance zone on one part in the assembly which is parallel to a datum on another part. In order to distinguish an assembly tolerance specification from a component specification, new symbols have been proposed. The feature control block and the assembly datum have been enclosed in double boxes.…
