Event Essay
Turtle Race
This summer my family went to our cabin in Longville, Minnesota. It’s always my favorite vacation because the lake is so peaceful and quiet. The lake looks like glass and the water is so beautiful. Longville is a small town but there is a lot to do so it’s always fun. Longville, Minnesota is home of the Turtle Races. It’s an event that everyone in Longville looks forward to in the summer. At this event people race turtles and anyone can race. These turtle races have been going on for over 60 years. The big event is always fun and exciting and I’ve always wanted to win a Turtle Race since I was a little girl. The race started at 1:00pm and people were lined up all through town ready to race. The line was very long and moving at a slow pace. The heat was brutal and I could feel the sun burning my skin. But I wasn’t going to let it stop me because I was determined to win. After two of waiting in line I was almost up to race. I was eyeing the turtles in the bucket to see which one I wanted. I wanted the turtle most eager to get out of the bucket because I figured that turtle was ready to race. My number was called to race and I dashed to the bucket to get a turtle and I just knew I picked up a speedy turtle ready to race. The turtle’s legs were squirming and moving around. The turtle was slimy and the shell was hard as a rock. I could feel it’s claws so I set it on the ground holding it in position to race. I knew I had a lucky turtle and this was going to be my year. The race was about to get started everyone was cheering and chanting. Everyone was waiting patiently and holding their turtles in position to race. The announcer shouts “Turtles ready, on your marks, get set, GO!” I released my turtle and it was off to the finish line moving all of its four legs as fast as it can go. I was shouting “Go turtle go!” and my adrenaline rushing. My turtle was in second place so far and almost to the finish line. Everyone was chanting

In 1947 it was reported that over 40,000 Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles were nesting along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico and today only 200 Kemp Ridley’s remain on those grounds, making these sea turtles one of the most endangered animals in the United States. When I was younger I remember visiting South Padre Island and seeing holes a long the shore line with little eggs inside them, I also remember this man who drove up and down the beach looking for those eggs in a golf cart. I asked my mom “Why is this man taking away these eggs, won’t the momma be sad?” my mom then told me that these were in fact the eggs of the Kemp’s Ridley. I had no idea how that was relevant, I was six…

This article was written by Dan Balz, a political author for the Washington Post. His target audience would be the American voting public, which means that, in writing the article, he attempts to cover occurrences in both the Republican and Democratic parties. In the article, the author states that the 2012 presidential campaign has been one of the most ruthless, all-or-nothing campaigns thus far. He points out actions of both candidates, Romney and Obama, that seem to indicate a genuine disrespect and disregard each candidate has for the opposing party. One such example is the malignant use of campaign ads. According to the author, while the campaign television ads have always attempted to encourage voters to choose a particular candidate, they have never gone as far as they have during this presidential race. The article states that both parties have used their campaign ads to not only take jabs at the other party, but also to blame each other for major problems. The Obama campaign has implicated Romney in the cancer death of the wife of Joe Soptic, who lost his job after a company that Bain Capital took over went bankrupt, following Romney's departure from Bain. Romney, on the other hand, has accused Obama of getting rid of the work requirement in the welfare reform act that was passed in 1996. I believe that the author made a valid point in his article, and that he backed up his statements with examples and facts, rather than with wild accusations. That alone gives the article more credibility. Those who have read or will read this article may come to learn something about their candidate and maybe even stop and thing about who they have chosen. Also, the article proves that there is no perfect candidate and that each side is just as desperate as the other to win this election. It could make one stop and realize that, with each passing election, the debate seems to get more and more…

“From the first day I went out there and discovered the problem, putting an end to it motivated me, no matter how long it took’’, said Aresco while talking about how to make safe passageways for turtles. Making safe crossings for turtles, tortoises, and other reptiles should be very important so that animals can walk around without having a possibility of dying. If underpasses were to be made, cars would also be safer and less animals would be killed.…
