Europa: Potential for life?
In 1610, the famous scientist, Galileo Galilei, looked upon a tiny moon of Jupiter later named Europa. A tiny nondescript moon of Jupiter, it did not seem like an attractive place for life. Europa is known to be covered in ice and slightly smaller than the Earth’s moon. At first glance this tiny moon seems like an inhospitable place where life cannot exist. However lately the theory that life may be present in Europa has gained momentum.
Despite the physical discrepancies, the oceans of Europa are very similar to our own oceans. How did scientists come to that conclusion? This is due to discoveries made by deep sea submersibles in the last 60 years. Researchers have found that life can exist that depend on a source of energy other than the sun. Here, deep in the oceans where the pressure is so great and there is no sunlight, life flourishes.
Europa is frozen with an icy crust estimated to be a few kilometres thick covering the whole moon. Underneath is Europa’s ocean and a rocky moon with an iron core. With all the ice what keeps the oceans liquid? The reason is tidal heating caused by the immense gravitational pull of Jupiter. This planet, due to its mass exerts a huge gravitational force, which in turn heats up the interior of Europa. Due to this scientists believe there are many hydrothermal vents in the ocean of Europa. These vents let out high energy chemicals that could be used to sustain life.
Like any other astronomers who knows about Europa, this had caught NASA’s and ESA’s attention. For a better understanding of Europa, they are trying to send a probe to Europa. For the success, both ESA and NASA have joined forces. They have decided to create the probe called the Clipper. The initial plan to explore Europa was to insert a deep sea submersible into the sea using a drill. However due to the heavy weight of the cabling, the plan was aborted. Instead they have come up with a different plan of sending a satellite to orbit

    If one applies common sense, it would be natural to assume that a body in deep space smaller than our Moon, in temperatures hundreds of degrees below zero, would be an incredibly cold and frozen rock solid.     Jupiter’s climate is very different to the climate on Earth, as well as the temperature that are much colder. Jupiter is a gaseous planet and so it does not have a solid surface, because of it being made out of gas it technically has no surface. Temperatures range from high to low on Jupiter because of all the types of gases and layers that they are in, such as the upper atmosphere where it is colder and increases closer to the center. At the top of Jupiter’s clouds the temperature is around -230 degrees Fahrenheit or -145 degrees Celsius. Jupiter’s temperature increases as you descend closer to the center of the planet. The temperature can increase so much to the point where atmospheric pressure is ten times greater than that on Earth and the temperature is 21 degrees Celsius which scientists call “room temperature.” This part of Jupiter is believed to possibly be able to support life, which would have to float and not need oxygen. To be exact Jupiter’s atmosphere contains 99% hydrogen and helium, the other 1% consists of methane, ammonia, water vapor, and trace elements. Under this layer of clouds which would also be the atmosphere, lie a sea of liquid hydrogen and helium that is 13,000 miles deep, and finally the core of Jupiter where the temperature is so high it is said to be hotter than the suns surface. From this came a small belief that Jupiter was a failed star because of the similarities to our sun. Some interesting facts about Jupiter weather are that it has very powerful storm systems, powerful lightning, and deadly radiation. Not unless we find a way to fight such extreme cold temperatures or live in a sort of cabin that floats and can provide oxygen, so I cannot really say we would be able to go because only in such a place can temperature be regulated and have oxygen provided for us to survive. Although we would not be able to go because of the complex weather system, some of Jupiter’s moon’s materials might be helpful…
