Eudora Mccarthy's 'The Road'
The road is a dark, gloomy and almost horrific book. At the beginning of the book we start with man, and his young son trying to survive in a dying world. The effects on the characters actions is mostly affected with their new environment.
The father has lost so much to this dark world, he now calls him and his sons home. The father lost his wife for she didn't want live in this new world, so she killed herself. “The woman: You can think of me as a faithless slut if you like. I've taken a new lover. He can give me what you cannot. The man:Death is not a lover”(mccarthy 29). The effects on the man after his wife's death strongly show later on in the book. He walked away leaving what he placed on road, where he placed. This action showed how the father was trying to put the past, far behind so he could focus on the future. The man is trying to protect the one thing pure, his son. The man wants to protect his boy from all harm, even if it means killing so that bad men get their hands on him. The man and his son were pushing the cart on train tracks when the man spotted someone. The man used his body as a shield and covered the boy. The boy's father took and arrow to the leg trying to keep the boy unharmed. The father's love and loyalty to the boy ultimately lead to his death. This a sad and somewhat remarkable event, that love could survive in even the worst conditions. The man might have lost all he once knew but he had a brand new love to call his own. In the most cases people would leave the ones the once loved to die so they could live. Although that is not the case in this story. As the man sat dying the son was trying to savor every last moment he had with his father. Love can keep a insane man sane, and that is true when it comes to the man. He is a character with so much depth and yet so much
