In Euclidean geometry the perpendicular distance between the rays remains equal to the distance from P to Q as we move to the right.
However, in the early nineteenth century two alternative geometries were proposed. In hyperbolic geometry (from the Greek hyperballein,
"to exceed") the distance between the rays increases. In elliptic geometry (from the Greek elleipein, "to fall short") the distance decreases and the rays eventually meet. These non-Euclidean geometries were later incorporated in a much more general geometry developed by C. F. Gauss and G. F. B. Riemann (it is this more general geometry that is used in Einstein's general theory of relativity).1
We will concentrate on Euclidean and hyperbolic geometries in this book. Hyperbolic geometry requires a change in only one of Euclid's axioms, and can be as easily grasped as high school geometry. Elliptic geometry, on the other hand, involves the new topological notion of
"nonorientability," since all the points of the elliptic plane not on a given line lie on the same side of that line. This geometry cannot easily be approached in the spirit of Euclid. I have therefore made only brief comments about elliptic geometry in the body of the text, with further indications in Appendix A. (Do not be misled by this, however; elliptic geometry is no less important than hyperbolic.) Riemannian geometry requires a thorough understanding of the differential and integral calculus, and is therefore beyond the scope of this book (it is discussed briefly in Appendix A).
Chapter 1 begins with a brief history of geometry in ancient times, and emphasizes the development of the axiomatic method by the
Greeks. It presents Euclid's five postulates and includes one of Legendre's attempted proofs of the fifth postulate. In order to detect the

    A. INTRODUCTION Einstein's 1907 essay on relativity' does not appear to be widely known. Yet, as noted in the Introduction to the first part of the present English rendition of this essay,2 it is of substantial interest both on didactic and historic grounds. Its didactic value, relating to the treatment of a number of basic topics in Special Relativity, is particularly in evidence in the portion of Einstein's essay that is dealt with in the second part of the present rendition.' Its historical importance is associated mainly with the genesis of special relativity, and also with the genesis of general relativity. Part V, the last part of Einstein's 1907 essay, contains Einstein's first published expression of his initial highly important seminal ideas on the latter subject.     Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in Wurttemberg, Germany. He grew up into a secular, middle class Jewish family. He later attended elementary at the Luitpold Gymnasium in Munich. There he excelled in his classes and was able to separate himself from his fellow peers. He enjoyed classical music and was even able to play the violin and piano. Albert was later tutored by a Polish medical student named Max Talmud. He would come on Thursday evenings to introduce Albert to higher mathematics and philosophy. This book lead Einstein to wonder what a light beam would look like. He knew that light moved but he figured that is light were a wave then it would appear stationary. This contradiction fueled him to write “The Investigation of the State of Aether in Magnetic Fields,” at age 16.His paper talked about the question of the relative speed of the stationary observer and the observer moving with the light and what he focused on for the following 10 years. His family later moved to Milan, Italy because of financial problems. He was left at a boarding house so he would be able to finish his studies but soon fled to join his family. After arriving, he attended a special high school in Aarau, Switzerland. He attended this special school so he would be able to attend the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, Switzerland. To be able to attend he had to finish formal schooling and to do that he went to Aarau. He took an entrance exam at Zurich and got exceptional marks in mathematics and physics but failed the rest.
