Etty Hillesum's Spiritual Development
Throughout the texts discussed in class this semester, I noticed the differences in how each one discussed the location of God and the ways in which they discovered God. In particular, Etty Hillesum’s spiritual development struck me because it is so similar yet so different from my own. Etty Hillesum is overwhelmed by the presence of God within herself and allows it to envelope her entirely. Her writing about her spirituality during the Holocaust is ethereal: “... Somewhere inside me the jasmine continues to blossom undisturbed, just as profusely and delicately as ever it did. And it spreads its scent round the House in which You dwell, oh God” (Hillesum 179). She devotes herself to tending to God within her, later saying that she will try
