Ethnocentrism In Arranged Marriage Essay
Ethnocentrism is the practice of judging another society by the values and standards of one’s own society.We aren't born with those thoughts or customs but we are taught this from our family members and the respective society we are born into.Every culture is different and we should respect the way people think and live as long as they aren't committing a crime against someone's life.What I find ethnocentric about some cultures is arranged marriages.
An arranged marriage is when a family chooses the bride or groom for their child.Arranged marriages are considered wrong in our society because the children are treated as objects .Young men and young women get their freedom taken away to choose the person they want to be with for the rest of their lives.The parents choose who they think will be a good bride or groom ranging from anything from social status,wealth,or the way they look.In some incidences they don't even …show more content…
You can focus on other things in your life since you don't have to get into the dating world.Everything is set up by spouse's respective families and they come to an agreement,like a contract negotiation.They will have the support of both families when the marriage goes through rough patches financially or emotionally.In India there is a low divorce rate since its a taboo to get a divorce since couples will often remain together to protect the honor of both families.
Arranged marriages have their pros and cons,depending on the circumstances you can benefit from it or it can be detriment.I don't believe in arranged marriages because the person as the right to to choose who they want to marry even if they make the wrong decision.From my personal experience an arranged marriage took the girl that I loved away from me because the culture of my girlfriend believed in arranged
