Ethnic and Cultural Awareness in the Workplace
Abstract
This paper examines how Hispanic struggles within the workplace to negative factors such as discrimination, unfairness, injustice and harassment. It also places emphasis on historical and comptemporary antedecants, multiculturalism, and oppression.

Introduction In an ideal world, every person is treated equally when it comes to getting a job, advancing in their career, and being treated fairly in the workplace. However in reality, we know this is not the case. Racial discrimination does still exist in hiring, firing, and promotions and unfortunately discrimination against Hispanics in the workplace is on the rise. As the economy worsens and job losses mount in America, there is an increase in discrimination toward Hispanics in the workplace in America. Racial discrimination poses a large problem in the American workplace. Racial discrimination affects people all over the world. In defining racial discrimination, the National Research Council differentiates between differential treatment and differential effects, creating a two-part definition: one being differential treatment on the basis of race that disadvantages a racial group and two being treatment on the basis of inadequately justified factors other than race that disadvantages a racial group with a differential effect (NRC, 2004:39-40). People of all ethnicities and from all different walks of life are influenced in some way by workplace discrimination which is the most common form of discrimination. While America has always stood for being a country with diverse ethnic cultures that make us great, the fear is that those who have the least may suffer the most in this economic downturn as unemployment rises and jobs, even those that were previously unwanted, now become a precious commodity.     Overall, their findings indicate that employers significantly prefer white and Latino job applicants, relative to equally qualified blacks (30.1% and 25.2% compared to 15.2% respectively). The white tester's racial advantage narrows substantially when criminal record was assigned to white participants only (17.2% and 15.4% compared to 13.0% respectively).     America is one of the most diverse countries in the world with people of many cultures, ethnicity, genders, and religion. However, it has not always been as tolerant of its diversity as evident of America’s history on race, religion, and gender relations. As a result of this history, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was enacted and prohibited employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces all of these laws (FMWM, 2008).
