Ethics and ethical principles are important components of any profession. In the field of psychology, in particular, psychologists are expected to conduct their activities in a manner that strictly conforms to the code of conduct as well as the ethical principles for the profession. Many a times, psychologists come across situations that puts them in the midst of serious ethical dilemmas and severely tests their professionalism and ethicality. As the term implies, conflict of interest is simply a situation in which individuals have competing loyalties or interests. Standard 3.06 of the APA manual for psychologists is categorical that they should avoid professional relationships that are harmful, exploitative, or which bring about an impairment in objectivity (Haeny, 2014). Psychologists should avoid taking roles where certain relationships or interests could impair their competence, objectivity, effectiveness in performing their functions, or expose to harm those with whom the professional relationship exists (American Psychological Association, 2016). It is inappropriate and unprofessional for psychologists to engage in private and unofficial work relationships with clients, socialize with clients in their practice, take gift offers, and last but not least, engage in physical contact with their clients (Afolabi, 2015). The issue of multiple relationships within the psychology practice has also been highlighted by the American Psychological Association. Psychologists should refrain from entering into multiple relationships that might hinder the effective exercise of their professional competencies and objectivity (American Psychological Association, 2016). Dr. Jones has engaged in multiple relationships in the process of helping her client. The first potential implication of engaging in multiple relationships is with regard to the conflict of interest. Being in a relationship with Mr. Albertson and at the same time liaising with his lawyer has created a conflict of interest. On one hand, Dr. Jones is supposed to be honest and provide accurate information related to the client while on the other hand, he should protect the privacy and confidentiality of her client.
