This has led many to define justice in such a way that it includes the obligation to narrow the inequities between rich and poor. This has been done in a number of ways. One approach, like Nozick's, does not focus on equality of results, the actual distribution of society's goods, but on equality of opportunity. Unlike Nozick's, however, it recognizes that many are impeded in their ability to participate in the life of society and share in its benefits by factors that, while they may not be the result of discrimination or malfeasance, still are not chosen or deserved by the subjects. This includes inequality in natural gifts, family background, education and so on. This view recognizes that society has the obligation, to the extent that it is able, to help compensate for these inequalities. Thus society would have an obligation to provide compensatory education, job training, health care, day care and so on, so that those who start out deprived will at least have a chance to compete for decent jobs, housing and so on. This definition still tolerates large discrepancies in the actual distribution of goods, but at least it recognizes some form of social obligation to help those most disadvantaged.
Other theories of justice focus on outcomes. They insist that the actual distribution of benefits and burdens in society should conform to certain rules. These usually take the form of "to each according to his/her X," where X could be merit, contribution to society, or need. The first two envision some sort of rewards system, where people are compensated for hard work, character, ability, and what they are able to do for others, but are not allowed to accumulate or hold undeserved wealth. The third leads to a communist society that simply distributes goods as needed to give everyone the same level of benefits regardless of merit.     Since envy and egalitarian go hand and hand, recent research was done by a Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan, Elizabeth Anderson, noticed that the “concern of distributive justice is to compensate individuals for misfortune” (290). In a way, this approach is similar to a humanitarian approach because the misfortune is not able to come up with knowledge or money as frequent as those who do. Anderson had criticized one of Ronald Dworkin’s writings about how that equality is “envy-free” and how this further demonstrates that egalitarian views are solely based on “mere envy” (287).     There are also those who argue that the mini al state is too small and dos not facilitate the redistribution of resources and as such cannot address inequalities between citizens. The too small argument follows that if some people have more wealth than others do, those who lack resources will have an unjust limit of living good lives. Nozick’s reply is that this kind of distributive justice is unjust. The resources are not initially distributes and are acquired or created by individuals who can exchange them. Therefore, any distribution by the state would be redistribution, which would violate the rights of the individuals. To replace this account of distributive justice, Nozick provides the entitlement theory where he argues that for any possession of property to be just it must have been acquired through a just means. This argument advances the position held by Locke that individuals are entitled to claim property rights in free resources when they mix the resources with their labor. The transfer of the property must also be just and voluntary. If the current property holder created the property or received the property through a just transfer then they are entitled to the property. If all the individuals in a society are entitled to the property they hold then the distribution of property is just and any forcible redistribution would be unjust.     In hindsight, it is always easier to see how we might have done things differently. How can ethical reasoning help us identify what our options might be before we act and evaluate which of those options might be the most appropriate course of action? Like most academic disciplines, the study of ethics is charged with energetic debate. The ethical principles traditionally applied in business and professional settings are acknowledged on numerous websites such as those belonging to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics and others. A synopsis of five of them appears below.1 Ultimately, it falls on the individual not only to determine which ethical decision-making principle[s] best apply to the situation, but also to resolve conflicts that the iterative process may reveal. Here are some ideas to consider: Applying a number of principles, or approaches, helps to view the situation from different vantage points, and reveals facets of the problem perhaps not previously considered. A multi-faceted process encourages discussion with others and may elicit additional viewpoints as well as reveal how these positions may converge or differ. It fosters a fair evaluation of conflicting perspectives, each of which may be held for what appear to be "good" or "right" reasons. Frequently, applying each of these principles separately can reach similar conclusions regarding a proposed action, although the reasons why it is seen as a wise or unwise choice may differ. Considering multiple approaches can strengthen the confidence among all concerned in a decision to decline a proposed course of action as inappropriate, when it might have once held wide support.…

    Some people sit back and think about how good of a life they have, while others are wondering why they are constantly feeling like they are at a disadvantage. This is what Namit Arora, discusses in his essay “What Do We Deserve?” He often thinks to himself, “How much of my good life do I really deserve? Why me and not so many others?” (Arora 87) and what he means by this is, why is it fair that he receives so many rewards in life when others are struggling to pay the bills. Well I completely agree with him; not everyone is going to have the same rewards in their lives because of many different factors including family background, genetics, environment and so on. However, while one might not start off as wealthy or intelligent or as athletic as someone else, it does not mean that they do not have the opportunity to become as great as the people who are more fortunate. So when it comes to the social and economic justice in today’s society, I would come up with a model that allows all people to have equal opportunities to achieve whatever goal they would like to achieve no matter what type of living condition that they are born into. This idea sounds almost identical to the already existing model called the Libertarian model. The Libertarian model is one of which “distributive justice favors a free market with well-defined rules that apply to all” (Arora 87). In other words, all people get the equal chance to work for they want in life. However adding on to this model, I would create programs that help out everyone who is struggling, whether they are rich or poor. This idea is similar to the Meritocratic mode, which is a model that helps out the needy and less fortunate. As one can recognize my new model is somewhat of a mixture between the Libertarian and the Meritocratic, however it is still a little different because instead of the government only helping out the “less fortunate,” they would actually be helping anyone who is willing to take the time…
