Ethical Issues In Higher Education
Student development in higher education, is often a “complicated” process, and administrators and other professionals in the industry need the necessary tools, like being sensitive to student’s backgrounds and different cultures, for the “pursuit” success of student affairs. The American College Personnel Association outlines their argument that when administrators handle issues “responsibly” their student body population will in turn, live their “with some sense of equanimity” in the statement of Ethical Principles and Standards. The development of students is a multi-dimensional; and college administrators have to have the ability to discern when to use the appropriate techniques or “theoretical perspectives” to “identify learning opportunities and to reduce barriers that inhibit development.”
For the first Case Study, regarding the financial aid packages for incoming students, the Student Affairs professional has a responsibility and an obligation to give full-disclosure and transparency to their student base. Withholding information about the students’ financial aid package, does not seem like a fully mature and competent decision to make by administrators, which “maturity” is deemed as a “must quality” for an effective professional in …show more content…
Serving a diverse population does not require or mean that college administrators should be fully knowledge about all cultures, but it does mean, they must act with respect and have an understanding of the different multicultural elements and personal characteristics that exists in the student population.
