Ethical Issues In Brazil Essay
Currently, Brazil has unequal land structures in the word with just 1.5% of rural landowners occupying over 52% of all agricultural land 4. This has been as a result of the urge to utilize the available land for development purposes. A few members of the society in this regard look into different ways in which they can occupy larger parcels of land leading to resistance by the larger local communities. Such resistance thus hinders the national prosperity as well as that of the world.
The Ethical Dilemma Ethics systematizes, defends, and recommends concepts of right and wrong action. Different ethical principles outline the best way for people to associate with one another and live. The principles also determine what actions are right and …show more content…
This means using a particular grabbed piece of land for development would be considered unethical if it infringes the rights and freedoms of others 5. Another ethical principle regarding the use of land is the utilitarian land ethics. According to the theory, an ethical action is that which produces the maximum good for the people. The theory has been used in most cases to decide how land is connected to economic use and development 5. In this regard, actions that improve the well-being of the larger group would be considered ethical. Land grabbing for economic development in this regard would be unethical since it also benefits the land developers and not the general society. Economic land ethics, on the other hand, is purely based on the economic self-interest regarding the use of land. As such, grabbing land for development would be considered ethical since it leads to the achievement of economic goals of individuals.     Leopold explains that humans are being unethical to the land. He states that “We can be ethical only in relations to something we can see, feel, understand, love, or otherwise have faith in.” Leopold illustrates this mechanism as a pyramid.
