Ethical Egoism
I believe in Ethical Egoism and think it would be the best way for people to live. If everyone believed in Ethical Egoism, the world would probably have better people in my opinion. With Ethical Egoism, a person will be able to get ahead in their own life and provide a better life for him or his family. While being an ethical egoist you can still help others so the world won’t be a completely selfish world. And combined with the social contract, it keeps people and things in an order. By believing in Ethical Egoism and pursuing your own self-interest then your life would be better. Yes, you may have to step on people in your way, but we already do that in life. If someone is competing for the same promotion as you and you know they come in late often, you should make it known so you can get the promotion instead of the other person. Then by getting that promotion, you’re able to provide a better more comfortable life for yourself and family. I do believe it is okay to step on people to promote a better life or situation for yourself. Yet while being an ethical egoist, you can still help others when your self-interest coincides with the well-beings of others. Of course no one wants to live in a cold, heartless world so by being able to still help others would stop the world from becoming completely selfish. You can give food to a homeless shelter and in return receive a gift card to your favorite store. So you got what you needed and helped you out the best and yet you were still help to someone else. Because whether it comes down to your and the person next to you giving food to the homeless, someone will benefit from doing so, so the homeless still will get fed. Now with Ethical Egoism combined with the social contract, the world still would not fall apart. Since we would still have laws against stealing and murdering, it would be in a person’s best interest not to commit crime if he did not want to spend the rest of their life in prison. By having the

There are a few reasons as to why I do not think an ethical egoist would agree with Socrates decision to stay and be executed. For example, egoists don’t care about the good cause, Gods cause, the cause of mankind, the cause of truth, of freedom, of humanity, and of justice, which will all Socrates does care about. Egoist believes that the only concern is themselves and that there is no meaning to good or bad.…

The idea of ethical egoism leads to the same idea of the “golden rule” in Hobbes’ theory. The golden rule states that you should do unto others as you would have them do unto you, while ethical egoism is used to maximize your satisfaction. Hobbes’ theory states that if you do to others as you would have them do to you then you are more likely to have people do those good things for you in return, maximizing your satisfaction and supporting the idea of ethical egoism. If one were to do bad things to others and not treat them well, then that person is more likely to have bad things done to his or herself, achieving the opposite effect of ethical egoism.…

Although we think of egoism today as something to be repressed in the human spirit, in actuality, it can accomplish great feats. This is clear, as the lack of “ego” in Anthem led to a society stuck in the dark ages, devoid of personality and innovation. If everybody in Equality’s world had embraced the human ego, the problems that Equality faced in the story never would have been problems at all. In fact, despite anything that occurred that led to the loss of knowledge as we see in Anthem, humans working for their own benefit would have led to the collective benefit of society as we see it today. If they had accepted the importance of individualism, then Equality’s ideas could have been accepted, as well as countless others. The unmentionable word, “I”, could be mentioned in everyday speech. Eventually, there would be no boundaries or limitations as we see in Anthem. The right to pursue your best interests is freedom. Egoism is…

    An Argument Against Egoism

I shall argue that the ideas of both psychological and ethical egoism are fundamentally flawed and should not be practiced. Egoism is flawed because it ignores the fact that people have a predisposition for compassion toward others that cannot be completely expelled from their motives of action. Egoism is also flawed due to the fact that altruism cannot coexist with egoism; therefore, because there is altruism in the world, egoism cannot be practiced logically. Egoism is also flawed in that it contradicts itself within its own definition and consequently cannot hold true through the tests of real life situations.…

In the Euthyphro, Socrates asks an important question concerning the nature of piety. Socrates is skeptical and asks, "Is conduct right because the gods command it, or do the gods command it because it is right?" This question is very significant and has become one of the most famous questions in philosophy. Antony Flew, the British philosopher, thinks that whether a person can grasp and force the point of this proposed question, is a good determiner of their aptitude for philosophy. The significance is this: if we accept the theological conception of right and wrong- we're caught in a major dilemma. Socrates' question requires us to clarify what we mean.…

Generally, every society has certain actions that are agreed upon as either being selfish or selfless. Psychological egoists try to raise questions about whether selflessness is even a possibility. James Rachel on the other hand tries to refute their argument. He believes that psychological egoism is the viewpoint that everything you do is selfish, because the motive behind any action is your own self-interest. (Sumner, pg.75)…

    Ethic Theory and Practice

In the second chapter of our book Ethics Theory And Practice It discuses ethical egoism and utilitarianism. Ethical Egoism is a theory that states that everyone should act in their own self interest. Ethical Egoism can take three forms: Individual ethical egoism, which states that everyone ought to act in my own self interest. Which obviously can’t work because not everyone is thinking about just one person. The next possible form it can take is personal ethical egoism, which states that I ought to act in my own self interest, but I make no claims about what anyone else ought to do. Which also in my opinion doesn’t work because there is always people helping others. The book states that another problem with such individualistic systems is that they fail to take into consideration the fact that human beings are not isolated from each other and that the moral and immoral actions of all persons affect other people around them. The last form of ethical egoism is Universal ethical egoism, which states as its basic principle that everyone should act in his or her own best self interest, regardless of the interest of others, unless their interests also serve his or hers. The book states that this theory does not state only what I should do; rather, it concerns itself with what all human beings should do if they want to be moral: they should always act in their own self-interest. In my opinion universal ethical egoism is selfishness because even if its not acting selfish it is still being selfish. The book gives a good example of an inconsistency that Universal Ethical Egoism has. It states that suppose, however, that Tom is acting in his own self-interest, which is not in the ethical…

Theory of ethical egoism is a moral theory that is about how an action is done for our own best interest. It’s deciding what’s most favorable for me that’ll benefit my own interest. It’s putting one’s own welfare first. Ethical egoism is also seen as for example as performing actions of good deed to someone else where at the end you’re promoting your self-interest. Though you’re thinking of your own self-interest you’re still making sure that what you do is done wisely and have considered any long term effects that may come along.…
