Customs, Courtesies, and Traditions
The Army is an organization that instills pride in its members because of its history, mission, capabilities, and the respect it has earned in the service of the Nation. A reflection of that pride is visible in the customs, courtesies, and traditions the Army holds. Adherence to them connects us with soldiers throughout America's history. The Army has its own customs, both official and social. Some have been handed down from the distant past while others are of comparatively recent origin. Those customs that endure stand on their own merits. As a long established social organization, the Army observes a number of customs that add to the interest, pleasure, and graciousness of Army life. A custom is an established practice. Customs include positive actions-things you do, and taboos-things you avoid. All established arts, trades, and professions, all races of people, all nations, and even different sections of the same nation have their own practices and customs by which they govern a part of their lives. Many Army customs compliment procedures required by military courtesy, while others add to the graciousness of garrison life. The breach of some Army customs merely brands the offender as ignorant, careless, or ill bred. Violations of other Army customs, however, will bring official censure or disciplinary action. The customs of the Army are its common law. These are a few:Never criticize the Army or a leader in public.Never go "over the heads" of superiors-don't jump the chain of command.Never offer excuses.Never "wear" a superior's rank by saying something like, "the first sergeant wants this done now," when in fact the first sergeant said no such thing. Speak with your own voice.Never turn and walk away to avoid giving the hand salute.Never run indoors or pretend you don't hear (while driving, for example) to avoid standing reveille or retreat.Never appear in uniform while under the influence of alcohol. If you don't know

Military courtesies include correct forms of address like; Sir, and Ma'am, and when each should be used; the salute, and standing at attention, proper wear of military covers, and the rules for behavior in different ceremonies. Specifics can change depending on an individual's rank, location, and conditions. A military funeral, for example, requires stricter etiquette than a normal day. Courtesies are sometimes relaxed under field conditions; officers may discourage salutes in combat areas to avoid making themselves a target for snipers, and also in the United States of America as well as some allied nations, it is forbidden to salute both indoors, and when in the field, a battle situation where snipers are likely to pick out officer targets watching for salutes.[1]…

Have you ever wondered why your kid stands at attention when they are playing the National Anthem when you are at a sporting event? You might ask why don’t you put your hand over your heart? Or, why are you so stiff? I know I have received those questions. Lots of military customs and courtesies go unknown to a significant portion of this Nation’s population particularly when members of our Corps silently obey those time honored traditions while in civilian clothes. Here is a short list of things you may or may not know:…

A Code of Conduct as described by Collins (2012) defines ones behaviors in relation to given situations. For the military, the Code of Conduct was established as a result of the gruesome conditions that prisoners of war were faced with during the Korean War. The standards outlined in the Code of Conduct were the standards developed to guide Soldiers while in combat or captivity and were issued in an executive order on August 17th 1955. These same standards of conduct have been revised only twice. The first revision was to clarify the meaning of certain words and the second was to change the Code of Conduct to reflect a gender-neutral standard. A Code of Ethics is guiding principles that are established to remind us that in various situations, this is who we should strive to be (Collins, 2012). No different than any other profession, the Army has established values that are to serve as guiding principles for the Soldiers that have sworn to defend the US Constitution. These seven values are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless-service, honor, integrity, and personal courage and serve to guide Soldiers actions in everyday decisions/problem solving situations. The Army has placed a renewed emphasis on ethical decision making and with the establishment of the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE) in 2010 has shown a commitment to change the cultural mindset of an Army that has been at war for over 14 years. Along with the Army Values, goes the Warrior Ethos: (I will always place the mission first; I will never accept defeat; I will never quit; I will never leave a fallen comrade) four guiding principles that Soldiers understand violating will have strategic implications on the overall success or failure of the…

Standards are necessary within an organization to promote discipline, production, and efficiency. Recently, the Sergeant Major of the Army visited the Sergeants Major Academy and the focus of his presentation was really about Army Standards. The Sergeant Major’s message got me thinking about Army standards and the inconsistent application of these standards throughout the Army, specifically the ethical dilemmas that arise due to this inconsistency. If an organization’s standards are applied inconsistently, that organization’s culture changes and allows room for unethical application of those standards. In the Army we see this inconsistent application of standards in the areas of height and weight standards, the APFT, the tattoo policy, application of punishment through the UCMJ, and in unit reporting.…

Lack of this in a service member not only hinders the mission of the command but of the entire Army. LOYALTY, DUTY, RESPECT, SELFLESS SERVICE, HONOR, INTEGRITY, and PERSONAL COURAGE are Army core values that are instilled in each personnel’s life the instant that the oath of enlistment is pledged. Loyalty is to bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. constitution, the Army, and other soldiers. Be loyal to the nation and its heritage. Duty is to fulfill your obligations. Accept responsibility for your own actions and those entrusted to your care. Find opportunities to improve oneself for the good of the group. Respect is to rely upon the golden rule. How we consider others reflects upon each of us, both personally and as a professional organization. Selfless Service is to put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own. Selfless service leads to organizational teamwork and encompasses discipline, self-control and faith in the system. Honor is to live up to all the Army values. Integrity is to do what is right, legally and morally. Be willing to do what is right even when no one is looking. It is our “moral compass” an inner voice. Respect in the Military

    • 5062 Words
    • 21 Pages

Respect is not only shown verbally, but also by one’s behaviors and actions. For example, if someone (be it a soldier or not) you respect asks you to do something—you should show him or her the respect they are asking for and do what they say. Don’t argue, just do it. In the Army this often comes into play on a daily basis. If someone you respect asks you to do something, you should do it immediately and without hesitation. You should do it quickly. For instance, if someone asks you to go knock out twenty-five pushups, mountain-climbers, dips, pull-ups, crab walks, bear crawls, or another exercise, you should immediately show them the respect and do it. Do it fast and do not complain. Do not question them, do not ask for further explanation, and do not do anything other then what they ask. That might give them the impression that you do not respect them. If you perform the duty they ask, It will help show them you respect them and their word or authority. When someone has the feeling that you are respecting him or her, than they will behave…

As an opening I will be giving a short summary on the different responsibilities a soldier has and what I will be covering in this essay. The Army itself is a large responsibility that every soldier has. As I’m often told it’s the little stuff that really matter because all the little things amount to bigger things. Each and every soldier is responsible for their appearance, being on time, physical fitness and a good deal of other thing that form their responsibilities. It’s all these little things that help make up a good soldier. A single soldier can make a big impact on other soldiers around him. This impact can be for better or for worse depending on how the soldier presents himself. No one wants to see a bunch of raged bums in the army. Being in the right uniform, at the right place, at the right time shows a basic level of self discipline and motivation. As other soldiers take notice of someone doing these things it can help motivate them to further improve on themselves. However there is an opposite side to this. If a soldier is always late, in dirty or messed up uniform, or not at the right place it can influence others in a negative way. It can cause others to not to care as much about their responsibilities and loss of motivation. It is the soldiers’ responsibility to follow the guidelines set down by the Army regulations, NCOs, and officers appointed over them. During the course of this essay I will be going on a in depth explanation of the guidelines covering appearance, importance of rank structure, punctuality, and discipline.…

Customs and Courtesies are among the main fundamentals of military life, the other being the Seven Army Values, upon which Soldiers are expected to live and rely upon both on and off duty. Customs and Courtesies date back to the inception of the military service, and are one of the defining features of a professional within that service. The idea that at any point in time that they can be lapsed, forgotten about, or dispensed with is ludicrous, and undermines esprit de corps. These customs govern Soldiers not only in their professional life but in their social life as well, they add to the interest, pleasure and graciousness of army life, and this is reiterated throughout a soldier’s career.…
