Essays for School
April 10th, 2013
Final CIA project The topics I chose for my current issue analyses seem to be more centered on social issues. The topics that I wrote about were gang rape, texting and driving, transgender, death, and same sex marriage. There seemed to be more of a pattern concerning death. Three out of seven articles I wrote about were about violence, whether accidental or not. I believe I was drawn to these articles because when reading them I was emotionally affected. The articles about transgender and same sex marriage affected me because I have family members who are homosexual and they have transgender friends. The article about rape that I wrote about affected me because I am a big activist in the rape movement, to educate people more and to stop rape from happening. The texting and driving article affected me as well because my best friend’s sister got hit by a driver who was texting and not paying attention to the traffic light. I would suppose that the way these articles affected me shows I have deep compassion for issues in our society and I would love to try and help out with making the world better for people today and generations to come. Our society, in my opinion, has become much more violent than it used to be. I believe most problems in our society are important. If there is a problem, people should come together to help fix it. In order to help the world people need to be more involved, and informed as well. As a citizen you should be aware of what the country is going through, and what you can do as a person to help. Being informed is the first step. Everyone is affected in some way by the problems that come over our society. It is true our society has come pretty far in accepting other people, though I wish they could be completely accepting. Gay marriage is still an issue and that honestly shocks me. When our society can learn to love everyone for who they are, we will all be much happier. I have actually enjoyed doing these

“We drank when we were young and we grew out of it. It’s just a phase that all students go through.” I can agree to an extent but doing so can also get the person or another innocent person killed. In the 2013 article University Star, author Alexis Acguirre wrote the article “National Drinking Age should be lowered to 18”. The title itself sounds terrifying and unfavorable. I feel as if the author has a careless attitude about this topic and a little selfish due to his comments. Aguirre stresses and keeps restating the fact that people 18 years and older are considered adults and should be treated as such by being allowed to legally purchase and consume alcohol. Aguirre must feel as if there’s not enough dreadful things that underage kids do in this world and feels that his way of handling this situation would be to lower the drinking age. Aguirre states that as soon as a person turns 18 they are considered an adult legally so therefore they should be treated as an adult and should be allowed to consume alcohol. Aguirre also states that an 18 year old legal U.S. citizen can do such things as ink up their body, join the military, vote, and fill their lungs up with smoke and a few other things an 18 legal adult can take action in. She believes that as young adults they can partake in making their own decisions about alcohol. She argues that lowering the drinking age could make it easier to regulate consumption among younger adults as well as encourage healthy drinking habits. If the legal drinking age is lowered, people between the ages of 18 and 20 would be able to drink in safer, more controlled environments. Aquirre is influenced in such a way that lowering the drinking age is the right thing to do because she is convinced that young kids drink anyways so let’s give in to them anyways and make things worse.…

Eckermann el al 2010; (pp. 21) introduces the idea of policies as a set of actions or to statements of intention. Australian governments has created and implemented polices concerning the indigenous population. These policies have included European settlement, protectionism, segregation, assimilation, integration, self-determination and finally reconciliation. Assimilation (1950-1960); the aim of assimilation was to make the aboriginal problem gradually disappear so that aboriginal people would lose their identity in the wider community (Crawford & Tantiprasut 2003, p. 42). Similarly, another intention of assimilation policy was to raise the standard of housing, health and education for aboriginal people by allowing them to move into town and cities. Aboriginal people experienced in finding work and housing due to discrimination (Crawford & Tantiprasut 2003, p. 42). Segregation (1890-1950) The policies of segregation were brought in under the pretext of protecting the aboriginal population from violence and harassment (Vickers & Issaac 2012). It is also the policy of separating the aboriginal people from the European settlers. Segregation would protect indigenous people from European influence but it was also a means of keeping the aboriginal people from the Europeans (Vickers & Issaac 2012). Reconciliation; Reconciliation is about unity and respect between aboriginal and Torres Strait islander and non-indigenous Australian. It is about respect for aboriginal and Torres Strait islander heritage and valuing justice and equity for all Australian (Behrendt 2012, p. 380). It is the process of aboriginal Torres Strait islander and non-aboriginal Austrians moving forward into a phase of mutual recognition of healing and justice (Bherendt 2012, p.380). Ongoing effects of colonisation for indigenous Australian There are many effects of British colonisation on indigenous Australian one of the worst impacts was the loss of land and loss of culture. The…

Societal points of view have been changing in the past and they always will, due to unfair treatment. The right way to go about reaching a civil solution is peaceful protest. I believe that peaceful protest positively impacts society. It’s all about perspective. Learning how to see things through another person’s point of view is always eye opening. If we go on never standing up for who we are, society will not progress. Now a day everyone wants to be treated fairly and given what they deserve, and if no one stands up to unfair, wrongful treatment, the world will be unbearable.…

The article “Red Flags Before Santa Monica Shooting, But Pointing Fingers is Hard”, by Gloria Goodale states the need to raise awareness in schools, workplaces, and families and teach people to identify red-flag behaviors. Such signs can include a change in behavior, an interest in violent weapons, strange writing, feeling hopeless and the desire to hurt someone. People can be trained recognized behavior before incidents happen, but there are challenges, because it could discriminate against people with mental health problems. The article “Colleges Are Watching Troubled Students”, by Jeffrey McMurray, mentions how many colleges and universities began monitoring and sharing information about troubled students after the Virginia Tech shootings, to prevent crime and violence on school campuses. School officials created a “watch list” of troubled students and decided whether they needed professional help or if they should just kick them out of school. Both articles are similar because if “red flag” behaviors were spotted early on it could prevent those students from harming themselves and others.…

Our modern American society is easily captured to things. We live in a decent society, but we live in a society where you cannot voice your opinion or say anything about anything without being criticized about what you think. Our country is well, but there are starting to be mass shootings or shootings in different parts of the country. U.S is inclusive, but if Trump becomes president, his goal is to immigrate the muslims back to their home country because he believes they are the terrorists. Everyone does belong, and the U.S are a very diverse country. Our society always has something that is trending and if you bring the trend back up about a week after, people will just tell you,”oh this is very old, get with the program” which is dumb because…

http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/writersref7e/ In Tim O'Brien's Vietnam novel The Things They Carried, the main character is named Tim O'Brien, but the author claims that the work is fictional. In Tim O'Brien's Vietnam novel The Things They Carried, in which the main character is also named Tim O'Brien, the author deliberately blurs the line between autobiography and fiction. In Vanity Fair, William Makepeace Thackeray presents readers with a heroine whose ambition and disregard for the morals of the nineteenth century make her seem more like a woman of our time than of her own. In Thackeray’s nineteenth-century novel Vanity Fair, Becky Sharp is an impoverished young woman who plots deviously to get money and status in her society.…

“My biggest pet peeve is just girls who go to sports bars who have no intention on caring what teams are playing, like they’re looking for just a night out. That drives me crazy than anything else. Like don’t pretend to be a sports fan.” This quote was publicly said by American actor Jerry Ferrara. A sports team, no matter what the sport is; baseball, basketball, and football are nothing without the support of their loyal fans. Although, many people like sports, and watch them on television, few people actually have a strong pride for a team, or really care about how a team performs on a competitive game-to-game basis. There are different kinds of sports fans such as die-hard, part-time, fair weather and homer fans that will be individually discussed in this essay.…

In this essay, the articles ‘Listen to the north’ by John Ralston Saul and ‘Which ‘Native’ History? By Whom? For Whom?’ by J.R. Miller will be analyzed, specifically looking at each authors argument and his appeal to ethos, logos and pathos. In the first article, ‘Listen to the North’, author John Ralston Saul argues that current Canadian policy when it comes to our north, and the people that reside there, is out of date and based on southern ideals that hold little bearing on the realities that face northern populations. He suggests instead that the policies and regulations should be shaped by people who know the territory and it’s needs, namely people who live there. In the second article, ‘Which ‘Native’ History? By Whom? For Whom?, Author Jim Miller discuses conventions in recording native history, focusing on an area he refers to as native-newcomer history. He discusses topics such as who should be recording said history, and for whom it should be intended, as evidence in the title. Both of these articles provide arguments that appeal to ethos, logos and pathos, but it is my opinion that John Ralston Saul makes a more convincing argument to his audience in ‘Listen to the north’ than Jim Miller makes in ‘Which ‘Native’ History? By Whom? For Whom?’.…
