“The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without colour, pain or past” (Lois Lowry). Pleasantville is a 1998 American fantasy comedy-drama film written, produced, and directed by Gary Ross. A brother and sister, David and Jennifer, are sucked into their television set and suddenly find themselves stuck in a 1950’s television show called “Pleasantville.” David and Jennifer suddenly find themselves in this strange city, as Bud and Mary Sue Parker, completely transformed and therefore black and white. “Pleasantville” is a film that can be classified as a dystopian, a satire, and a bildungsroman story.

A dystopia is a futuristic, imagined universe in which exists an oppressive society, and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Pleasantville is a dystopian story. David and Jennifer are both transported into a “perfect” world within a black and white television show where there is no fighting, no questioning of authority, and there are no fires. The people in Pleasantville do not know anything about the outside world. “What’s outside of Pleasantville?” (Ross). The geography class does not learn about "world" geography. The whole world lives on Main Street. When asked where Main Street ends, the teacher simply answers that the end of Main Street is the beginning of the Main Street again. In Pleasantville, women take care of the house while men work. When George Parker, Bud and Mary Sue Parker’s father, comes home from work and says, "Honey, I'm home", his wife is supposed to come to the door to welcome him, but she does not. Had she been home, she would have made dinner, and welcome him, as usual. In this city, everyone follows the same routine everyday, everyone looks the same, because they are all black and white, and the pages of the books are blank, because books are a symbolism of knowledge and the people in Pleasantville are not allowed to know ones

Pleasantville explores gender boundaries are established through single beds, no colour, no sex, and lack of knowledge. Make up also plays an important role in breaking boundaries in Pleasantville as it did in 1984, when Betty puts on make up to cover the fact that she has turned into a ‘coloured’ person. Bud and Mary-Sue are agents for change in Pleasantville ad bud educated Mr Johnson and the rest of the Pleasantville population by filling in the books, putting out the fire, showing them colour. Mary-sue educated betty by teaching her what sex is. Repeated scenes in Pleasantville ensure that there is no change in their world, such as George walking home every afternoon, putting his briefcase down, and saying ‘honey, I’m home’. This is broken when he gets no reply from his wife, as Betty is out with Mr…

Ross also portrays and somewhat satirises an unchanged society's people to be ruled by their own mindlessness, and in their epiphany, translates to the viewer that change can come from within or from outside one's self but is different for everyone. Dark overtones are used to parallel the Pleasantville to a society under fascist rule. However, in the end, change will always affect everyone and this new understanding will help to overcome the changes encountered in the future that may seek to detriment the society. The three scenes which will be discussed in relation to the filmmaker's attitude towards change are the breakfast scene, the classroom scene, and the rain scene.…

I have recently read the novel The Giver, by Lois Lowry, and watched the movie Pleasantville. These works focus on making perfect societies. The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a community with many rules. He is assigned the job of the Receiver of Memory and goes through great amounts of pain and happiness during his training. Pleasantville is about David and his sister Jennifer who goes into their TV to a show called Pleasantville. This town is supposedly peaceful and pleasant. Although The Giver and Pleasantville are both about perfect societies, their characters, setting and the symbolism establishing their greater involvement.…

To survive in a society an individual needs to be able to cope with the changing society. The 1998 film Pleasantville, directed by Garry Ross is a social commentary on the changing values upheld in the 1950s contrasted to the 1990s. The concept of transformation of an individual and the society is explored deliberately through the use of cinematic techniques, themes and strong characterization. The notion of ‘knowledge is power’ is a widely explored motif continuously/consistently throughout the film as individuals transform along with their society. This concept is successfully explored through the symbolic use of historical and biblical allusion along with different film techniques. The unique sense of individuality is also experienced by the characters of Pleasantville through the use of humour and other film techniques. The opening montage is a first impression on the values upheld in the symbolic society of the 1950s as contrasted to the values upheld in the 1990s shown as the film progresses. Utopia is a place everyone wishes to be in, a place of bliss and relaxation where everything is perfect. An establishing shot of Seahaven’s centre expresses the “utopian” society which confines Truman. Clean streets, perfectly built buildings, beautiful sunshine and impossibly clean mown grass are few of the many “utopian” aspects in Seahaven. The costume of Meryl also prevents the audience with a stereotypical 1950’s housewife; fair skin, glossy hair, perfect body structure and a beautiful face; all features of every man’s dream girl. Yet in “There’s no place like home” even beauty and utopia cannot keep us from our hearts desires. The wedding day; a day every single person looks forward to, “the happiest day of our lives”. However through a medium close up shot of Truman as Meryl says this reveals Truman grunting and rolling his eyes. In the same scene as Meryl and Truman’s grandmother are trying to evoke happy memories of his past, the cross cutting from photos to Truman shows a lack of interest from Truman about what is being discussed. Hidden from Meryl and Truman’s grandmother but wide open for the audience to watch and digest. Truman is not currently happy and satisfied with life because he wants what he has never had. It is a part of human nature to always long for the things we do not have, but Truman has never had the chance to attempt to fulfil his desires as he has been a slave to…

The whole city of Pleasantville went through dramatic changes in a small amount of time. People in Pleasantville (especially teens) rebelled against the normal routine life of the city by starting to do drugs, having sexual relationships before marriage, very odd behaviors and more. David and Jennifer showed their unrecognized and unexpressed sides of themselves that no one in Pleasantville never thought and wouldnt dare of committing it. David and Jennifers influence on the people of Pleasantville sparks a desire for human expression that ignites a revolution.…

In Pleasantville the idea that reality will triumph over appearances is shown by David’s negative view of his family and yearning for the family he sees in Pleasantville.. The appearance that David sees in Pleasantville is peace, calm, relaxing and great but in his reality it is the opposite of Pleasantville as he has difficult problems with his family. This is shown by of contrast of the perfect family living the American Dream in Pleasantville compared to David’s own family. The montage of shots of all the members of Bud’s family in Pleasantville contrasts heavily to the empty and wide shot of David and just his mother, emphasising how his family is so different from his ideal family on Pleasantville. Although David wants to become part of Bud’s family, he realises this is just an illusion based on his desires. This is clear when he realises Bud’s family isn’t as perfect as it seems through the uncomfortableness he feels with the repetition of the word “swell” to describe what he thinks is good and returns to his persistent illusion of his real family, his mother.…

In his last year, unhappy at the partition of India, Gandhi worked to stop the carnage between Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs that raged in the border area between India and Pakistan. He was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by Nathuram Godse who thought Gandhi was too sympathetic to India's Muslims. 30 January is observed as Martyrs' Day in India. The honorific Mahatma ("Great Soul") was applied to him by 1914.[7] In India he was also called Bapu ("Father"). He is known in India as the Father of the Nation;[8] his birthday, 2 October, is commemorated there as Gandhi Jayanti, anational holiday, and world-wide as the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi's philosophy was not theoretical but one of pragmatism, that is, practicing his principles in the moment. Asked to give a message to the people, he would respond, "My life is my message."[9]…
