Essay Title Click File at the top of your page and select Page Setup or Page Layout. Set your margins at one (1) inch: top, bottom, left, and right. Please use Times New Roman font in 12 point. Format your paragraphs to double space the text.
Always include your name, your professor’s name, the course name, and the date at the top left-hand corner of your page. Title your work—remember, your title should be original and make readers want to read your essay. Be sure to center the title and do not use quotation marks or italics unless you are quoting or naming another work within your title. For example, the following essay titles include the title of a short story, “The War Prayer,” and a novel, The Damnation of Theron Ware: Mark Twain’s “The War Prayer”: War, Patriotism, and Religion Fickle Females in Harold Frederic’s The Damnation of Theron Ware If your essay runs more than one page in length, it will be necessary to set up the page layout to include headers and footers at ½ inch. A header is along the top of the page; a footer is along the bottom. (By now, you’re probably thinking, “I know this already!” Sorry about that.) Set your header to begin on the second page by selecting the option that reads Different First Page. Type your last Name and select the option for page number. See second page of this document for example. An essay, by definition, is a minimum of three paragraphs: introduction, body, and conclusion. Your essay should be guided by a thesis statement that expresses the main idea; think of it as a promise you make to your reader. Some thesis statements forecast the organizational structure of the essay. The introduction should hook the reader’s interest and offer some idea of the purpose of the paper. The body is where you’ll support the thesis with reasons, examples, explanations, illustrations, and enough detail for the reader to understand your ideas. The conclusion might close

Begin by writing - in your head, at least - your second paragraph (that would be the one you just read, above). Your second paragraph will tell people what your essay says. Some people write abstracts or executive summaries in order to accomplish this task. But you don't need to do this. You are stating your entire essay or article in one paragraph. If you were writing a news article, you would call this paragraph the 'lede'. A person could read just the one paragraph and know what you had to say.…
