Essay On Youth Gangs
I found youth gangs to be one of the most interesting topics in this class. Before the discussion in class and reading the chapter I thought I could easily define the word “gang.” I never relied just how broad the term “gang” was. There are many different definitions of what a gang is, the first two pages of the chapter is dedicated to explaining the different definitions of a gang. Usually, when someone thinks of a gang, they would think of big scary men accompanied by symbols, territories, loyalties and hierarchy. I found it fascinating how similar this description is to sports teams. You could easily make the argument that the St. Louis Cardinals is a gang. As it mentioned in the book belonging to a gang is not illegal. The criminal acts that gangs commit is what makes them illegal. Criminal gangs engage in violence, drugs, and often strike fear into their community. There are lots of aspects that make up a gang and just as many reasons to join one. But I found it interesting how exactly gangs communicate through symbols and even clothing. I couldn’t believe that gang members could disrespect other gangs by the color of shoelaces they were wearing. The subject of gangs and gang violence is very interesting and I think would be something great to study. I never knew gangs were a rising occurrence in rule areas and suburbs as well as large cities. I get the impression Law enforcement has only recently begun to address the problem of gangs. Tactics such as the pulling levers is a good start, but much more can be done. Most youths are only “potentials” or “wannabes” not real members of gangs. Law enforcement and schools should focus on kids and create personal and community attachments to prevent kids from turning to
