George Mackay Brown (1921-1996)

This script is about exploring the ways in which George Mackay Brown (GMB) presents relationships between characters in the following seven short stories – Shell Story, The Paraffin Lamp, The Bright Spade, Tam, The Wireless Set, Three Old Men and Icarus. GMB was from the Orkney Island and presented a clear understanding of Island life from the stories that have been studied. He was the youngest of six children; born 17 October 1921. Except for periods as a mature student on mainland Scotland, he lived all his life in the town of Stromness in the Orkney Islands. He was affected by tuberculosis as a child, which recurred, rendering him unable to work on the land or sea as the majority of village folk did. Instead he took to writing.
