Essay On Test Fairness
Following administration, and scoring of the test the next step is to perform an interpretation of the test. While interpreting the test the interpreter may find that, there are a few test bias that may have caused the scores to be high or low within a certain group causing the test to be unfair. Test bias and test fairness are two topics that individuals will continue to debate for years to come. Salkind (2013) described Test fairness as a very sensitive of use of examinations, quizzes, tests, etc. and social values and judgements are two influences in clarifying the results of test scores (Salkind, 2013, p. 294). However, Salkind (2013) described Test bias as an inconsistency in test scores between various groups due to factors that are irrelevant …show more content…
Because the test favors one group over another on can say that, this is a violation to standard 3.01 Unfair Discrimination due to a groups age, race, gender, or etc. With these, finding it will diminish the validity of the test because a valid test should be unbiased and fair (Salkind, 2013, p. 295). The National Center for Fair and Open Testing states there are five basic principles for obtaining a fair and non-bias test which include: 1. Assessments should be fair and valid, 2. Assessments should be open, 3. Tests should be used appropriately, 4. Evaluation of students and school should be consist of multiple types of assessment conducted over time, 5. Alternative assessments should be used (Salkind, 2013, Chapter 18). This cannot change unless we follow the ethical standards for both test bias and test fairness. The standards that I found to be related to test bias was as followed: 3.01 Unfair Discrimination, 5.01 Avoidance of False or Deceptive Statements, 5.04 Media Presentations, 6.02 Maintenance, Dissemination, and Disposal of Confidential Records of Professional and Scientific Work, 8.01 Institutional Approval, 9.01 Bases for Assessments, 9.09 Test Scoring and Interpretation Services, 9.10 Explaining Assessment Results (Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct,

    These Caucasians believe that these tests were built off of equality, not biases. Such as Gilman Whiting and Donna Ford said, “ It is also important to note that test construction is grounded in the assumption of homogeneity and equal opportunity to learn and acquire knowledge and experiences … everyone has had an equal opportunity to learn and be exposed to the tasks in the test and its format (Ford, 2004)” (Ford and Whiting 3). In this case, Caucasians believe that standardized tests were made in a way that would provide all students, of all different kinds, to have an equal chance of success. In terms of supporting that there is no more cultural biases in tests, Ford states, “ Many test developers have gone to great length to decrease or eliminate (if this is possible) culturally biased (or culturally-loaded) test items (Johnsen, 2004). Accordingly some scholars contend that test bias no longer exists” (Ford 1). However, to refute this claim, there are modern test developers, College Board, who still have had studies proving that their test, the SAT, is still culturally biased. “The average test scores of black students trail those of white students not just because of economic disadvantages, but because some parts of the test result in differential scores by race for students of equal academic prowess” ( Jaschik 1). The study was able to prove that certain questions give Caucasian advantages by analyzing the result of the previous SAT tests. This is able to show that even today, cultural biases are present.
