Due of his repeated viscous crimes and unpredictable story, Theodore “Ted” Bundy has made himself one of the most well known serial killers to date. The mystery behind his crimes still go unsolved as the number of murders committed remains unknown. His story was the inspiration behind many novels and films and it helps us to understand the startling reality of serial killers around the world.
Introducing Ted Bundy
Bundy was born on November 24, 1946, in Burlington, Vermont, to a 22-year-old single mother, Eleanor Cowell. Eleanor gave birth at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers. According to family members, Bundy grew up in an unstable environment as his grandfather often made his dislike towards African Americans, Catholics, Italians, and Jews well known. It is also said that he was physically abusive towards his wife and children and suffered hallucinations which lead him to argue with people who were not present. Because of his grandfather’s unruly behaviour, Bundy’s grandmother lead a very “fearful and submissive life” (Montaldo, 2016). She underwent treatment for agoraphobia and depression. When Bundy was a few years older, both he and his mother Eleanor, moved to Tacoma, Washington where she began a relationship with Johnnie Bundy. Soon Eleanor and Johnnie got married and together had several children. This was a hard transition for Bundy as he now had to accept that he was no longer an only child. Adapting to new siblings is often a difficult transition for young children as they may not yet be familiar with the concept of sharing. “The Bundy's home was small, cramped, and tense. Money was scarce… he was often left alone while his parents dealt with their more demanding children.” (Montaldo, 2016). Growing up, Bundy was a very shy child who “preferred
