The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), creates and maintains professional standards, and seeks to strengthen the development and professional growth of its members. NASW outlined the foundation of the social work profession to guide social work students and social worker professionals by formulating basic values, ethical principles, and ethical standards. The mission statement of social work, defined by NASW Code of Ethics (2008) is, “To enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty”. Social workers accomplish this by focusing efforts on client well-being, paying particular attention to the client’s surroundings, and the environment in which they live. Social workers participate in ongoing social justice efforts to promote social change.
