Review of an Army White Paper: The Profession of Arms
The United States Army Professionalism is a calling – not a job. “Let the buyer trust” Professions relationship with the layperson is governed by the dictum Credat Emptor. Understanding the meaning of a Profession, Balancing Roles of the Professional leader and the Army’s Professional Culture will help explain what the Human Resource Sergeant Role in the Army Profession means.
Profession-Embrace, understand, and competently practice the expertise of the profession. The key to being a professional is not necessarily always being the most effective but the most efficient. As Human Resource Sergeant a main role of being a strategic Leader is balancing the relationship of expertise, and it’s Current, Potential and future operating environments. Not only does is it hurt the Human Resource aspect but the entire nation when balance’s is not persistent. To keep a balance Human Resource Sergeants must also maintain a positive culture and climate. The actions of a strategic leader can influence a junior enlisted on their long-term effects. “Such actions determine whether Soldiers see themselves as professionals serving a calling or as time-servers filing a government job.” (An Army White Paper, Page 9).
The Army has shared the same beliefs between values, goals and training that creates the team institution over a long period of time. The seven Army Values have been the glue that keeps the Army culture together over such distant areas. “What cannot be understood cannot be changed” (An Army White Paper, Page 9). Without the Army having the same culture it would create confusion and lead to demoralizing behavior and dysfunctionality.
