Essay On Miami Plan
If you’ve never heard of Miami plan it’s probably because you didn’t spend your college years at what Robert Frost called, “the most beautiful campus there ever was.” Miami plan is part of the jargon students at Miami University use to describe the liberal arts plan the school requires. Basically, the university requires students to take classes outside their major in subject areas like the humanities, science, and English.

One element Miami University takes very seriously is the global studies requirement. Students must either take nine credit hours of global studies classes on campus or take six credit hours abroad. According to Community Commons, a weekly newspaper in southern Ohio, around 38% of Miami University students choose to go abroad therefore, most are opting into the later. Like many students I wanted to get my Miami University plan classes out-of-the-way in the first two years. I took classes in geology and religion as I fulfilled requirement after requirement. There was one section of Miami University plan, however, that I never fulfilled. I

Since my graduating class had already started in the major they gave us an option. You could either stick with the old major or choose the new major, which had less credit hours, but required a double major or minor. I immediately jumped at the new major program. I knew exactly which other major I wanted to add-on, professional writing. Right away I knew I made the right decision. I loved my classes, the environment, and my professors. Unfortunately, since I switched programs some of the classes I had previously taken didn’t count towards the new program. This means I had taken classes that didn’t count towards my major or the Miami plan program and this set me back. Currently, I’m six credit hours away from graduating on time. Going on the Study Abroad program in Florence will put me back on track and keep me on time for graduation this

Elizabeth Kolbert’s article “The Siege of Miami” pans out interesting structural patterns that can be overlooked at first glance. However, through a thorough analysis of Kolbert’s article, we can start to see how often certain fields and disciplines interconnect with the economic state of South Florida. For instance, Hal Wanless, a geological scientist who spent half a century studying how South Florida came to be, brings up a complex prediction that pans out an interesting structural pattern throughout the article. With the use of scientific data, he argues that insurance companies may stop selling policies, and banks may stop writing mortgages due to the impending risk that is posed by climate change, symbolizing an interconnected approach between…

I have always wondered why so many people love going to West Palm Beach and Tallahassee. These two cities are not a skip and hop away from each other, but they are visited by many. These cities have been around for decades and share similarities as well as differences. West Palm Beach is home of many beaches, however Tallahassee has none. What they do have in common is they both are located in Florida, and both cities have are homed to many tourist.…

I am a Running Start student and the first quarter I took a class called Music Appreciation. I knew I needed an art credit to graduate high school and the class sounded easy. The first day of class when the professor handed out the syllabus I realized that the course content hadn’t consisted of what I had expected. Rather than cover a broad topic of all types of music the course focused heavily on understanding the history and meaning of Classical Music.…

I entered school in August of 2009 and did not focus on my studies. After just one year my GPA was a 1.376, because I did not have the drive that I had in high school to succeed. After a couple of years away from Texas Christian University, while attending a 2-year college, I realized what I wanted to do with my life, sparking the motivation I had been searching for. I then decided to return to TCU and fix my awful GPA, which I managed to do with hard work, determination, and appropriate priorities. After one year of nonstop studying and focus, I have managed to raise my GPA to a 2.777, removing myself from academic probation and qualifying for opportunities I was not eligible before. This was difficult for me because I also work part-time…

I have become fond of the liberal arts education The College of Charleston offers, which emphasizes exploration into all areas of academia. An example of this would be the honors history courses that interest me, as I enjoy learning beyond my focus of science, and into other areas that create an appreciation for society’s diversity. One of the many aspects of the Honors College I find engaging are the academic opportunities unique to the Honors College that allow students to develop in their major interests, but also diversify their knowledge in all areas, as the academic requirements extend from calculus to western civilization. The opportunities the Honors College extends to its students are what make it appealing to me, and my experience so far in college has led me to believe that I am the right fit for the Honors College, as it would help me develop as a person, and help me achieve my…

Being a freshman at Miami University, many things are very different from the public school educational background back in Brooklyn, NY, where I was born and raised, until now residing in Oxford, OH, attending college. So far I have completed my first semester of college. I play football for the Miami University Football Team, but did not get to play my first year. So basically my hobbies are really just football. I attend Miami to study and receive my bachelors in Kinesiology/ Athletic Training. It is a real interesting and very fun major to be studying. I am not to very sure about any minors, because my academic interest has so many different opportunities just under that one major. I am currently taking 18 credit hours this semester. I have 3 Kinesiology courses, KNH 212, KNH 209, and KNH 206. AMS 207 (American Studies), ENG 105, ENG 112 (English), and EDT 110. Most of the writing assignments in my courses are very similar. We complete papers on the argumentative debates of topics, comparison, rhetoric etc.…

Academically, the school system has always provided me the tools so that I could learn, but outside the traditional high school classroom, there is a myriad of opportunities where knowledge can be obtained. The summer before my senior year in high school the opportunity to take classes at the University of Louisville was bequeathed upon me. My parents guided me into possibly taking core content material classes, for example, math or science. However, there was a wide range of classes in which I could partake in, but the ones which caught my attention were in the Sociology department. Although my parents were not thrilled with my decision of taking leisurely courses which were possibly not going to count towards my future major in college, I felt it was the intelligent decision.…

My school only offered AP classes to students who were seniors. As a Junior, I wanted to challenge myself, and prepare for college, so I decided to self-study for an exam. After doing some research, I decided that the best AP exams for me were AP Microeconomics and Computer Science. These topics were interesting and were applicable to my prospective careers. I found an online course for AP Computer Science. For AP Microeconomics, I bought an AP exam prep book. Though my aspirations and goals were great, being committed them was a true challenge. I still had to keep my regular school work and activities as a higher priority. I was able to keep track with AP Computer Science for the first semester, but I tried to get through its lessons and assignments…

During my senior year of high school, I was undecided about what I wanted to do, I applied to many colleges but didn’t know which one was for me. I couldn’t figure out at the time if I wanted to stay local, or go away for college. After a while, I decided to go the first year to a local commuter college called Penn State Brandywine. I figured I could keep my job, still be close to family, and still see friends. However, over the period of my freshman year, it wasn’t what I was expecting and now I want a new and different experience. I initially was going here as an undecided major, however after looking at my interests I decided I wanted to pursue a degree in international studies, and my current college does not have that. That is one of the…

    My Working Experience

I am eager to improve myself, which is why I took 23 credits worth of courses in one semester, while simultaneously working part time up to 20 hours a week. I performed well, which is why I pushed myself even further. I took calculus II over the summer, while working longer hours. It did not work out well for me academically, and serves as my one poor recent grade. Although I struggled with the course over the summer, I don’t regret taking the course because it taught me a lot about how I learn information. Our minds are like sponges, and when I was taking 23 credits during the semester I was able to absorb the steady stream of knowledge from various different sources, despite the high volume. However, during the month long summer sequence I was being hit with a fire hose of information. Instead of absorbing the information, I was blasted back. After the fire hose turned off for the day, I was only able to absorb the remaining puddle of information around me, during the limited amount of time I was not working. I learned the lesson that I should have familiarized myself with the content covered in the class before taking it during the summer. I am currently taking calculus II during the Fall semester, and my familiarity with the material has led to me currently have a grade above 100 after the first exam. In the future I will familiarize myself with the information covered…

I sent letters of apologies as well as verbal apologies to those impacted by my actions. Maybe my expectations were too high but the responses I received seemed uncaring and non-supportive. Meaning, I need to have enough self-discipline to keep a school schedule and balance my studies with my job and my personal life. Doing my schooling online has been a really big change mostly because now I must teach myself. It is a lot different than sitting in a classroom all day and I find myself much more distracted. I also at times feel like this program is not as rewarding because it is a pass or fail course. I still don’t know how this will affect my GPA or my chances of getting into college. On the other hand, I enjoy this program because I feel like I can work at my own pace and doing one chapter at a time allows me to actually understand the topic and retain the…
