Essay On Intimate Partner Abuse
Many people in society are affected by violence and abuse. Domestic abuse refers to abuse against intimate partners, child, and elders. Abuse takes on many different forms physical, sexual, emotional and neglect when it comes to children and the elderly. Intimate partner abuse are violent acts done to but not limited to just women or heterosexual couples but it can happen to men and couples of the same sex. Children exposed intimate partner abuse can cause harm to their developmental and psychological health. Child abuse offenders are not just parents or guardians but usually someone close to the child. It is the law that healthcare providers who suspect child abuse be mandatory reporters by contacting child protective services to investigate. Elderly abuse happens when older adults can no longer care for themselves independently. The National Center on Elderly Abuse categorizes abuse in three forms domestic and institutional elder abuse, and self-neglect (Blais & Hayes, 2016).

According to Blais and Hayes (2016), violence in the community happens in neighborhoods and within the school setting. Horizontal or lateral violence refers to violence against a nurse by another nurse. Examples of horizontal or lateral violence include “ . . . undermining activities, withholding information, sabotage, scapegoating and backstabbing” (Blais and Hayes, 2016, p. 448). This puts the nurse often times in an ethical dilemma that produces anxiety and stress that could potentially affect their ability to do their job.     The Nursing profession is not one that one would expect to be riddled with acts of violence among colleagues. A common saying among new nurses relating to more seasoned nurses is that “Nurses eat their young”. Two of the reasons that were cited as factors in lateral violence, according to a journal article in Virginia Nurses Today, are low self-esteem and lack of respect for others (Brothers, Condon, Cross, Ganske, & Lewis, 2011).
